5 Boho Summer Outfits That Are Surprisingly Chic

Boho style has a hippie vibe, and the words relaxed, laid back, and funky usually come to mind.  But if you read my Boho-light shorts post, you know there are ways to make Boho look a little more refined and modern.

When you start with streamlined shapes and understated pieces and add a few subtle boho-inspired accessories, you get a cleaner, more modern look. Here are 5  Boho summer outfits that are surprisingly chic!

Embroidered Ribbon Flare Jeans

If you lived through the ’70s, you probably remember clothes, purses, and even guitar straps made from embroidered ribbon. This summer, we see embroidered ribbon jeans from Tory Burch. These cute faded flares have embroidered ribbon sewn across the waist and down the legs, giving the jeans a fun vintage feel. The bright gold buttons add a modern touch.

To make the jeans stand out, I’ve paired them with this adorable white smocked top. Smocking is also very 70’s, but the t-shirt style feels new and different.

Soft, squishy bags are very Boho. This blue crocheted one is more streamlined than most, but still very much in sync with the free-spirited vibe.  Studded rope sole ankle sandals with the sexy ankle strap add an upscale, earthy touch.

And what do you think about these fluffy, raffia earrings?  Do me a favor. Cover up the earrings for a minute with your hand, look at the outfit, and then pull your hand away. The earrings make a big difference, to tie the whole outfit together, don’t they? These are fun!

70’s Style Caftan

Here’s another great boho outfit that looks current and classy.  Isn’t the print on this gorgeous caftan stunning? The colors, the florals..everything is bold and bright, and I think that is what gives it such a contemporary look.

I love this top with very dark jeans because they make the outfit look dressier and chicer. Plus, dark blue makes the colors in the top pop.

This gorgeous white bag is soft and squishy – an element of true boho style and that great tassel makes such a fabulous style statement. And, how do you like the sandals? They’re streamlined and comfy, and that chunky cork wedge sole makes them look Haute hippie!

Boho Tiered Maxi Dress

Keep it simple seems to be the mantra here, and the key to making Boho look sophisticated and modern. Tiered midi and maxi dresses are as Boho as you can get, but many are a wild mess of colors and prints.

This cute tiered dress is simple, light, and breezy. Wear it with flat braided sandals, rustic dangle earrings, and this high fashion bucket bag, for a perfect head to toe, boho-lite summer outfit.

Wide Leg Bohemian Dream Pants

Big swishy wide-leg pants are a major element of Bohemian style. Talk about comfy! These look like you’d never want to get out of them. In the ’70s, more was more, and you might have worn these with a loose, billowy peasant blouse, but today it’s all about balance. Just a slim fitting tank top to these full bottom pants to create a modern, slimming silhouette.

A few fun accents like this fabulous rope bag, rope wedge slides, and these pretty gold beaded earrings keep this summer boho look natural and understated.

Batik Maxi Dress

You can’t talk about Boho without mentioning batik prints and tie-dye. This darling maxi dress, with its explosion of color, has an Haute hippie vibe. The twist tie neckline and the small structured crossbody add a nice, modern contrast.  Bright blue-beaded earrings and these fabulous rope wedges enhance the boho vibe in a classy way.

Do you have any favorite Boho Summer outfits, or it is too laid back for you no matter which way you wear it?
