One size, and what that actually means

Every piece here is cut as one size. That is not a shortcut — it is how the garment works. An open-front wrap has no fastening at the waist and no fitted bust, so it drapes rather than fits, and the same piece sits differently and correctly on a range of bodies.

What it does mean: check the length rather than the size. BellaDonna is 50 inches from neckline to floor, so on a 5'4" frame it will pool slightly; Mor is knee length on a 5'9" model and mid-calf on someone shorter. Chikankari, which is the part worth paying for

Elyse and Gardenia carry chikankari — shadow-work hand embroidery from Lucknow, worked in fine white thread on sheer fabric so the pattern reads from both sides. It has been made in the same city for roughly four hundred years and it cannot be machined; every stitch on those two pieces was put in by hand.

This is the real heritage in the collection, and it is Indian rather than Japanese. The silhouette is borrowed from the kimono; the craft is from Lucknow. I would rather tell you which is which than blur the two.

How to wear a kimono cover-up

Over swimwear is the obvious one, and the reason to buy georgette: it is sheer enough to show the swimsuit deliberately and light enough to dry in minutes.
