My newest favorites are the Carolina one-shoulder maxi ($265), which runs pink into cobalt with one balloon sleeve, and the Queen wrap midi ($258), with puff sleeves and a waist you tie yourself. For a fall ceremony, the Begum burgundy shirt dress ($288) has full sleeves and a bow, and the Zoe jacket dress ($358) comes in a forest green, burgundy and pink print.
For summer and garden weddings, my Gatsby poplin maxi (from $298) has a square neck and a fit and flare skirt made for twirling, in pink, yellow, black or orange cotton poplin. For the beach, the Duchess kaftan ($298) flows in red and pink with a waist tie, and the Antonia maxi ($285) has handmade floral tassel straps.
What the invitation means
Black tie: floor length, or a very formal midi in velvet or embroidery. Black tie optional: a maxi is the easy answer, and a dressy midi works too. Cocktail: knee length to midi, and the most flexible code of all. Semi-formal: a midi in a beautiful fabric. Dressy casual or festive: a printed midi with heels. Garden or beach: a maxi or midi in a light fabric, with a block heel so you don't sink into the lawn. If the invitation gives no dress code, a printed midi with heels suits almost every wedding. Color, and the one rule
Skip white, ivory, cream and champagne, which belong to the bride, and check the wedding website for the wedding party's colors so you aren't mistaken for a bridesmaid. Black is welcome, especially in the evening, and a black dress with gold, embroidery or print feels celebratory. Beyond that, wear the color you love. Burgundy, forest green and plum glow in fall and winter, while pink, coral, yellow and cornflower blue light up a spring or summer wedding.
