Most of my customers are women in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond, and the question I hear most before a wedding is some version of “what can I still wear?” My answer is always the same: anything you love. Your body and your taste have changed since your twenties, and that is a reason to dress with more intention, not less color.
I trained at London College of Fashion and Alexander McQueen, competed on Project Runway Season 13, and I design every print in my collection myself. This guide covers what works in each decade, the sleeve question, every season from spring to winter, every dress code, and the shoes. Everything comes in sizes XS to 3XL. There's No Such Thing as Dressing Your Age
If you've ever been told a hemline, a color or a bare shoulder is “too young” for you, fashion itself has moved on. Marie Claire reported that models in their 40s, 50s and beyond ruled the fall 2026 shows, adding that “caring about style doesn't have an age limit.” Who What Wear named Stephanie Cavalli, who is 50, as Chanel's breakout star after she opened Matthieu Blazy's couture debut, gray hair and all, as Vogue covered it.
On the red carpet, Vogue called the idea that anyone over 50 must suddenly dress demure “archaic,” and said style only appreciates with age. Glamour described the old age-based dress rules as blurrier and, frankly, outdated. I agree with every word. The only rule I give my customers is to dress for the woman you are now and love your body as it is.
What Works in Your 40s, 50s and 60s
These aren't rules, just what I see working for real women at each stage, based on what they tell me they want.
In your 40s
This is often the decade when style gets personal. You know what suits you, you've outgrown fast fashion, and you want a dress nobody else will be wearing. Choose one showstopper print and let it lead. The Zoe jacket dress in a forest green, burgundy and pink print or the Carolina one-shoulder maxi does exactly that.
In your 50s
Comfort and presence become the priorities, and neither means playing it safe. Fashion psychologist Sarah Seung-McFarland told Who What Wear that style is less about your age and more about “dressing the identity you want to project.” A wrap like the Queen lets you set the waist exactly where you like it, and the Duchess kaftan flows with a waist tie you adjust yourself.
In your 60s and beyond
Some of the best-dressed women at Cannes this year were in their 60s and beyond. Vogue singled out Isabelle Huppert in a bright red Gucci gown and Jane Fonda in black sequined Gucci. Take the cue: full glamour, full color. The Marquis in electric royal blue with handcrafted embroidery is a floor-length answer for a formal wedding, and the Gaudi velvet wrap brings long sleeves and printed velvet to an evening one.
Wedding Guest Dresses with Sleeves
“With sleeves” is the most searched request for wedding guest dresses at every age over 40, and the choice has never been better. Vogue notes that a long sleeve can mean leaving the shawl or coat at home, and it suits a church ceremony especially. Choose sleeves because you love them, for warmth or drama, not because anyone told you to cover up.
My favorites: the puff sleeves of the Queen, the bell sleeves and scalloped lace hem of the Sophie, the full sleeves of the burgundy Begum, the sheer balloon sleeves of the Opal, and the long velvet sleeves of the Gaudi. If you love a sleeveless dress, wear it. For a cool evening, add my hand-beaded Fleur jacket.

Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter Weddings
Spring
Vogue suggests florals for spring, or a bolder spin with rich hues like plum and golden mustard, plus long sleeves or a silk pashmina if it's too cool for bare arms. The Carolina in pink, purple and cobalt and the Sophie with bell sleeves are my spring picks.
Summer
Vogue tells summer guests to lean into saturated hues and vivid florals: a fluid midi for a backyard or seaside ceremony, floor length for a formal one. The Antonia maxi has handmade floral tassel straps on a full-length A-line, and my pink poplin maxi is 100% cotton poplin with a square neck and a fit and flare skirt that breathes in the heat.
Fall

Dress Codes, from Black Tie to Daytime
The Emily Post Institute says the invitation and the time of day are your best guide to how formal a wedding is. Here is how I translate each code.

Color and Print
Color is the easiest way to look joyful at a wedding, and it has nothing to do with age. Who What Wear pointed to over-50 style growing bolder, not more restrained, with pairings like lilac and red or Tiffany blue and emerald. Vogue's guides agree across the calendar: a semi-formal wedding rewards a bold hue, and “daylight demands you have fun with color.”
A print near your face does the work that jewelry would, and an original print means nobody else in the room is wearing your dress. The only colors to skip are the bride's: white, ivory and champagne. Black is welcome too; Vogue answered that question “unequivocally, yes.”
Shoes You Can Dance In
The best wedding shoe is the one you're still wearing at the last song. Cheryl Wischhover, 55, told Glamour that for dressy occasions her heels are low and blocky, and British Vogue makes the case that a ballet pump or a mule works with even a formal dress. For a garden or vineyard, a block heel or flat keeps you off the lawn, and for a ballroom, a low embellished heel gives you shine without the ache.

Yes. There is no age limit on bare arms. Wear sleeveless if you love it, and bring a jacket or wrap for a church ceremony or a cool evening. Many women choose sleeves for warmth or drama, which is a style choice, never a rule.
Can you wear black to a wedding over 40?
Yes. Vogue answered the question with an unequivocal yes, and black suits evening and city weddings especially. Add gold, sparkle, embroidery or a colored bag so it feels celebratory, or choose a print on a black ground.
What shoes should a woman over 50 wear to a wedding?
Low block heels or dressy flats such as ballet pumps or mules. Choose a block heel or flat for gardens and lawns, and a low embellished heel for ballrooms. Break shoes in at home and bring a second pair for dancing.
How is a guest dress different from a mother of the bride dress?
