What to Wear to a Winter Wedding
as a Guest

Quick Answer
For a winter wedding, wear a dress with weight, warmth and some shine: velvet, sparkly georgette, beading or heavy cotton, in a jewel tone or black with gold. Choose floor length for black tie and a midi for cocktail or daytime, add sleeves or a real coat, and leave white, ivory and thin summer cotton at home.
- Black tie: floor length is the safest choice.
- Colors for 2026–27: burgundy, red, emerald and sapphire, straight from the fall 2026 runways.
- Black is welcome when it has sparkle, beading or an interesting sleeve.
- The winter fabric is velvet, with sparkle and hand beading close behind.
- Stay warm with long sleeves, a cape or an embroidered jacket, plus a coat for the photos outside.
Winter weddings are my favorite weddings to dress for. The light is low and golden, receptions run late into the evening, and the season finally gives you a reason to wear the rich fabrics that wait in the back of the closet from March to November. The one catch is the walk from the car to the ceremony, and a good outfit plans for that too.
I trained at London College of Fashion and Alexander McQueen, competed on Project Runway Season 13, and I design every print in my collection myself. This guide is how I would dress a guest for a winter wedding between December and March: the dress codes decoded, the fabrics and colors that glow in cold-weather light, how to stay warm without covering up your dress, and the pieces from my winter edit I reach for first. Most pieces come in sizes XS to 3XL, and you can browse my full edit of winter wedding guest dresses any time. Is your wedding in October or November? My guide to what to wear to a fall wedding covers it month by month.

Winter Wedding Dress Codes, Decoded
Start with the invitation. The Emily Post Institute says the invitation and the time of day are your best guide to how formal a wedding is. In winter most weddings move indoors and into the evening, which nudges every dress code one step dressier than the same words would mean in July.
| Dress code | What to wear in winter | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Black tie | A floor-length gown is the safest choice. Vogue is strict about it (floor length, no midis), while Emily Post also allows a dressy cocktail dress. Velvet, embroidery and sparkle all belong here. | Marquis royal blue embroidered maxi, $328 |
| Black tie optional & formal | Floor length, or a very dressy midi in sparkle, velvet or beading, worn with heels and real jewelry. | Gia black and gold with organza sleeves, $378 |
| Cocktail | Knee to midi length in a dressy fabric. This is where velvet, metallic stripes and wrap dresses shine. | Velvet Green with its oversized bow, $338 |
| Semi-formal, daytime & church | A midi with sleeves in a heavier fabric. Many churches prefer covered shoulders, so bring a jacket if yours is bare. | Begum burgundy shirt dress, $288 |
| Courthouse & city hall | A polished midi or knee-length dress and a beautiful coat. Smaller wedding, same effort. | Margarita blue velvet jacket dress, $298 |
When you can't decide between two outfits, go dressier. A stylist quoted in the same Vogue guide put it simply: “it's always safer to be a bit overdressed than underdressed.” For the newer codes couples invent, like Gatsby chic or bohemian black-tie, see my guide to every new-age wedding dress code explained.
The Best Fabrics for a Winter Wedding
Fabric is the first thing I think about for a winter wedding, before color or shape. A summer dress in a thin fabric looks cold in December even when the room is warm. Who What Wear quoted By Rotation founder Eshita Kabra-Davies on exactly this: start with texture, meaning velvet, satin, brocade or embellishment.
Velvet, the winter fabric
Vogue called velvet a seasonal mainstay of the fall 2026 dress trends, in black and burgundy especially, and WWD found velvet everywhere in New York's fall 2026 eveningwear, with Lela Rose tying it to the holidays. Velvet holds color more deeply than any flat fabric, and under candlelight it almost glows. My Gaudi velvet wrap is printed velvet inspired by the stained glass of the Sagrada Família and Gustav Klimt's gold. The Velvet Green is striped stretch velvet with metallic threads and an oversized bow, and the Margarita is plush blue velvet cut like a jacket with a draped skirt.
Sparkle and hand beading
Vogue's fall 2026 report also described dresses covered in jewels, paillettes, embroidery and fringe, and Harper's Bazaar saw ladylike embellishment adding glamour to simple dresses at London Fashion Week. My Bella is hand beaded in an art deco pattern with soft gold glass beads on black georgette, and the Jewel is hand beaded black net. Both are the kind of handwork I grew up around in India, and both catch every candle in the room.
Heavier cotton for daytime
For a daytime or church wedding, a heavier cotton works beautifully. The Begum is 100% cotton poplin in deep burgundy with long sleeves, and the Mahal maxi is organic cotton sateen with voluminous sleeves in a print inspired by miniature painting. Sateen has a soft sheen that reads dressier than everyday cotton.
What Colors to Wear to a Winter Wedding
Jewel tones and deep reds are the colors to wear to a winter wedding in 2026 and 2027. Vogue reported red still leading the fall 2026 color trends, with burgundy back as “the ultimate cold-weather classic.” WWD found emerald and sapphire in almost every New York eveningwear collection, with red above them all. Who What Wear pointed to garnet, emerald and navy for winter wedding guests.
Those are my favorite colors to design with, and they suit winter light. Low sun and candlelight bring out deep, saturated color, while pastels can look washed out. Prints work in winter too. In Marie Claire, stylist Caroline Vazzana suggested keeping florals in dark, moody palettes, and that is exactly how I print the black-ground florals of the Opal, the Gia and the Hera, with gold running through each one.
The one color family to skip is the bride's: white, ivory, champagne and very pale silver. That rule doesn't change with the season.
Can You Wear Black to a Winter Wedding?
Yes, you can wear black to a winter wedding. Vogue answered the question “unequivocally, yes,” and said the old idea that black signals mourning has faded. Kabra-Davies told Who What Wear that black is often the chicest option, as long as the look feels celebratory.
My rule for black at a wedding: give it a second element. Gold, sparkle, a sheer sleeve or hand beading turns black into party dressing. The Hera is black and gold on an asymmetric one-shoulder line, the Gia adds woven organza bell sleeves, and the Bella is covered in gold beading. Add warm jewelry and a colored bag or shoe, and black looks joyful.
Sleeves, Capes and Coats
Long sleeves are the most searched winter wedding request, and they are a gift in winter. Marie Claire's Caroline Vazzana put it this way: a long sleeve can feel very covered and still be very chic. My favorites are the balloon sleeves on the Opal, the full sleeves on the Begum, and the long velvet sleeves of the Gaudi and the Margarita.
Capes are back too. WWD saw capes and caplets return on the fall 2026 runways, including removable jacquard caplets it called “handy for drafty venues,” and Refinery29 named velvet and capes among this winter's wedding guest trends. If you love a sleeveless dress, layer a statement jacket over it. My Fleur tapestry jacket is hand beaded by artisans in India and goes over a slip dress or a velvet midi. See more of my one-of-a-kind jackets.
Then there is the coat. Vogue reminded guests to bring a proper coat for backless and short-sleeve dresses. Choose a tailored coat in black, camel or a jewel tone that you'd be happy to wear in the outdoor photos.

What to Wear to a Winter Wedding, by Venue
The venue tells you almost as much as the dress code. Here is how I would dress for the five winter settings I hear about most.
01. A church ceremony
Daytime, often cool inside
A midi with sleeves, or a jacket over your shoulders during the service. The Begum in burgundy cotton poplin is right for a church wedding and warm enough for the steps outside.
02. A hotel ballroom
Evening, dressy, warm indoors
This is the place for your most glamorous dress. The Marquis for black tie, or the Gaudi velvet wrap for formal. Statement earrings and heels you can dance in.
03. A barn, ranch or mountain lodge
Rustic, cold outside, cozy inside
Velvet or heavy cotton, sleeves, and block heels or dressy boots for gravel and snow. The Margarita and the Begum both work. More ideas in my rustic country wedding outfit guide.
04. December and New Year's Eve
Holiday parties before and after
Pick a dress you'll wear again at a holiday party. The hand-beaded Bella and the Jewel are made for a champagne toast. See my holiday dresses too.
05. Courthouse or city hall
Small, daytime, lots of photos outside
A polished midi and your best coat. The Margarita jacket dress looks sharp with a tailored coat on the courthouse steps.
Winter Wedding Guest Outfits for Women Over 40 and 50
Most of my customers are women in their thirties, forties and fifties, and winter weddings are where they tell me they feel most stuck. The dresses they loved in their twenties no longer feel right, and department stores offer racks of black jersey. Here is what I tell them.
Choose the sleeve you love. A balloon sleeve, a sheer organza sleeve, a long velvet sleeve. Sleeves keep you warm and add drama at the same time.
Define your waist your way. A wrap dress lets you set the waist exactly where you like it. The Opal and the Gaudi are both wraps, and both come in sizes XS to 3XL.
Wear color near your face. Jewel tones and gold light up your skin in winter light far better than head-to-toe black.
Love your body as it is. Dress to celebrate the feature you like best, whether that's your shoulders, your waist or your legs. For more ideas, read my guide to what to wear to a wedding reception over 40.

Shoes, Tights and the Coat
The finishing pieces matter more in winter, because you'll be walking on cold ground and posing outside.
01. Block heels or dressy boots
Outdoor venues, gravel and snow
A block heel keeps you steady on uneven ground. For a barn or mountain wedding, a sleek heeled boot under a midi looks deliberate.
02. Embellished heels
Ballrooms and hotels
Indoors, go for a satin or jeweled heel. Closed toes are warmer and look right with velvet.
03. Sheer black tights
With dark dresses and midis
Sheer black tights are fine at a winter wedding with black or jewel-toned dresses. Skip opaque tights with a black-tie gown.
04. A tailored coat or wrap
For the walk and the photos
A coat in black, camel or a jewel tone, or a velvet wrap. Choose one you'd be happy to see in the pictures.
Winter Wedding Guest Dos and Don'ts
✅ The Dos
01 · Read the invitation and the venue
The dress code, the time and the location together tell you how formal to go. Evening and indoors means dressier.
02 · Choose weight and texture
Velvet, sparkly georgette, beading or heavy cotton look right in December. Thin summer fabrics don't.
03 · Plan the coat with the dress
Your coat will be in the outdoor photos, so treat it as part of the outfit.
04 · Wear rich color
Burgundy, red, emerald, sapphire, or black with gold. Winter light makes them glow.
05 · Pack flats for the dancing
Receptions run late in winter. A pair of flats in your bag keeps you on the dance floor.
❌ The Don'ts
01 · Don't wear white, ivory or champagne
Those belong to the bride, in every season.
02 · Don't wear a summer sundress
Thin cotton and pastel florals look chilly against a winter room, even with a jacket.
03 · Don't wear a short dress to strict black tie
Floor length is the safe choice when the invitation says black tie.
04 · Don't wear new shoes on ice or gravel
Break them in at home first, and choose a heel you can trust outdoors.
05 · Don't let a puffer coat be your whole look
Bring a tailored coat or a wrap for arrivals and photos, and check the puffer.

What to Wear to a Winter Wedding: FAQs
What should a female guest wear to a winter wedding?
Wear a dress with some weight and warmth, like velvet, sparkly georgette, beading or heavy cotton, in a jewel tone or black with gold. Choose floor length for black tie and knee to midi length for cocktail or daytime weddings, and add long sleeves, a jacket or a tailored coat.
What colors should you wear to a winter wedding?
Jewel tones and deep reds look best in winter light: burgundy, red, emerald, sapphire, garnet and navy, plus black with gold or sparkle. Vogue named burgundy the classic cold-weather color for fall 2026. Avoid white, ivory and champagne, which belong to the bride.
Can you wear black to a winter wedding?
Yes. Black is widely accepted at winter and evening weddings, and Vogue answered the question with an unequivocal yes. Give black a second element, such as gold, sparkle, beading or a sheer sleeve, so it feels celebratory, and add warm jewelry or a colored bag.
Can you wear burgundy or dark red to a winter wedding?
Yes, burgundy and dark red are among the best colors for a winter wedding guest. Red led the fall 2026 runways and burgundy returned as a cold-weather classic. Unless the couple has asked guests to avoid a color, a deep red dress is a beautiful choice.
Do you need a floor-length dress for a black tie winter wedding?
Floor length is the safest choice. Vogue says black tie means floor-length gowns and no midis, while the Emily Post Institute also allows a dressy cocktail dress. If you are unsure, choose a floor-length gown in velvet, embroidery or sparkle.
What shoes should you wear to a winter wedding?
Choose closed-toe heels for indoor evening weddings, and block heels or dressy heeled boots for outdoor, barn or snowy venues. Break new shoes in at home, and bring flats for the dancing if the reception runs late.
How do you stay warm at a winter wedding and still look chic?
Pick a dress in a heavier fabric with long sleeves, or layer a statement jacket or cape over a sleeveless dress. Add sheer tights with dark dresses, and bring a tailored coat or velvet wrap you'd be happy to see in the outdoor photos.
