Jacket Dresses for Women: Velvet, Tuxedo and Kimono Styles

The three jacket dresses
Zoe — $358. One shoulder, asymmetric, cut as a dress rather than a jacket worn over one. Twelve in stock, the most available thing here.
Margarita — $298. Navy velvet with a proper tuxedo lapel and an asymmetric draped skirt. This is the one people mean when they search for a tuxedo dress, and the only piece here with a real lapel.
Amalfi — $198. Positano print with a lapel collar, the lightest of the three and the one that travels. Two left.
Longline blazer dresses are a named trend this year
Who What Wear's five biggest blazer trends of 2026 put longline blazer dresses third on the list, describing a structured, boxy shape rather than the loose oversized jackets of the last few years. That is the Zoe and the Margarita, cut exactly that way.
WWD's report from Milan's fall 2026 tailoring found brands cutting heritage menswear fabrics "in cropped or elongated feminine silhouettes." A velvet tuxedo dress sits precisely in that gap: menswear language, cut for a woman, in a fabric no man's dinner jacket would use.
The kimonos and kaftans do the same job, softly
A kaftan is a jacket dress with the tailoring taken out. Same principle — one piece, the layer built in — and it happens to be having a moment of its own.
Who What Wear ran a piece on opera dressing as 2026's defining trend, built on robe-style layers and kimono-inspired dusters, and reported that it has "reached a crescendo pitch." I have been cutting these for years, so I will take the timing.
The BellaDonna ($198) is the one people keep coming back to — and there are three left. The Gardenia ($228) is emerald, the Elyse ($228) blue, the Retro ($228) printed, the Mor ($178) a wrap kimono, and the Morris pink wrap kaftan ($198) is down to one. The Mughal wrap dress ($198) in sage green is the quietest piece here and the easiest to wear to work.

- An office that still means it. The Zoe or the Mughal. No second layer required, which is the whole point.
- A winter evening, a party, a black-tie-adjacent dinner. The Margarita. Velvet and a lapel do the work; keep the jewellery quiet.

- Over something you already own. If you want the layer separate after all, the one-of-a-kind jackets are embroidered and no two are the same.

What is a jacket dress?
A dress cut with the structure and details of a jacket — a lapel, a button front, a tailored shoulder — so it reads as two pieces but is only one. It is not a dress with a matching jacket sold alongside it. The whole point is that there is nothing to take off.
What is a tuxedo dress?
A jacket dress with a tuxedo lapel: satin-faced, notched or shawl, borrowed from a man's dinner jacket. The Margarita is the one here with a true lapel. It is the most formal shape in this family and the easiest answer to an invitation that says cocktail or black-tie optional.
Can you wear a jacket dress to the office?
It is close to the ideal office dress, because the structure does the work a blazer would and you are not carrying a second layer around. Choose a longer hem and a quieter fabric for work, and save the velvet for the evening.
What do you wear under a jacket dress?
Nothing, in most cases — these are lined and finished to be worn alone. If the neckline is deeper than you want for a particular room, a fine camisole or a bodysuit underneath solves it without adding bulk at the waist.
What is the difference between a kaftan and a kimono?
A kaftan is a loose full-length robe that goes on over the head or wraps closed, with roots across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. A kimono is a Japanese T-shaped robe with square sleeves, worn open and wrapped left over right. What I make are kimono-shaped and kaftan-shaped garments rather than traditional dress, and I say so rather than pretending otherwise.
Is a kaftan smart enough to wear out?
In the right fabric, yes. A printed silk or a beaded kaftan reads as evening wear; a cotton one reads as a pool cover-up. The fabric decides, not the shape. Add a heel and simple jewellery and nobody will read it as beachwear.
How do I stop a kaftan looking shapeless?
Put the waist back in. A belt at the natural waist, or a wrap style that ties, gives the eye a line to follow. Failing that, let it be fully loose and keep everything else narrow — a slim shoe, hair back, nothing else floating.
