Velvet Dresses for Women
Velvet is my favorite fabric for the cold months. It holds color more deeply than anything else I work with, and under candlelight it glows. These are my velvet pieces: a printed velvet wrap, a metallic velvet midi, a velvet jacket dress and velvet to wear with everything else, each made in a small run.
My velvet dresses
The Gaudi wrap ($398) is my favorite: velvet printed in teal, blue and purple, inspired by the stained glass of the Sagrada Família and the gold of Gustav Klimt, with long sleeves and a wrap waist you adjust yourself. It comes in XS to 3XL. The Velvet Green ($338) is striped metallic stretch velvet with a square neck, an oversized bow and a tulip skirt.
The Margarita is a blue velvet jacket dress with long sleeves, an asymmetric draped skirt and a buttoned front, and the Barcelona is plush viscose velvet with flared sleeves, a mosaic and floral print and tassel details.
Velvet beyond the dress
My Arte jacket is printed and embellished viscose velvet, and it is reversible, so you get two jackets in one. The Audrey pants are blue velvet with an Art Nouveau floral print and a cropped hem. They run small, so order one size up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is velvet appropriate for a wedding?
Yes, especially from October through February. Velvet suits evening, black tie optional and winter weddings, and a jewel tone like teal, emerald or sapphire looks festive without competing with the bride. Skip white and ivory velvet, and save heavier velvet for indoor or cool-weather venues.
When can you wear velvet?
Velvet belongs to fall and winter: holiday parties, New Year's Eve, winter weddings and evening events. Lightweight velvet also works in air-conditioned venues at other times of year, but for outdoor summer events choose cotton or viscose instead.
How do you care for a velvet dress?
Check the care label first; most of my velvet pieces are dry clean only. Never tumble dry velvet or press it flat with an iron. Steam it from the inside to lift creases, and hang it with a little space around it so the pile is not crushed.
What colors look best in velvet?
Jewel tones show off velvet's sheen: teal, emerald, sapphire, burgundy and plum. Printed velvet, like my Gaudi, layers pattern over that depth, and metallic velvet, like the Velvet Green, catches the light at night.
