Cute White Dresses for Women for Bridal Showers, Bachelorettes & White Parties
White is the one colour in your closet that comes with a rulebook. As a wedding guest you leave it on the hanger — Who What Wear is blunt about it in The One Color You Should Never Wear to a Wedding. But the whole week around that wedding belongs to white: the bridal shower, the bachelorette, the engagement party, the rehearsal dinner. Add a white party, a graduation, a baby shower and a Palm Springs weekend and white earns its hanger several times over.
These are my white and white-ground pieces — original prints I draw myself and hand-beaded work made in India, from $88 to $358. I design every print in this shop from my studio in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I trained at London College of Fashion and Alexander McQueen before Project Runway season 13.
The white pieces, and what each one is actually for
Jasmina Hand Embroidered Dress — $358
The only solid white dress I make. Hand-beaded end to end in a fanned geometric pattern, sleeveless, short, with a wide scoop neck — the beading does all the work, so you need nothing on top of it. This is the bride's dress for the shower, the rehearsal dinner or the welcome party. It takes a long time to bead one, which is why there is never a stack of them.
Tulip Wrap Dress — $228
White ground, painted tulips and poppies in cobalt, marigold and coral, a flutter sleeve and a scarf tie that sits at the throat. It photographs as white from across a garden and as colour up close, which is exactly what you want at a daytime shower.
Freesia Floral Cotton Wrap Dress — $225
Cotton, white ground, buttercup and cornflower watercolour florals running into deep blue at the hem. A true wrap with a spaghetti strap and a surplice neckline. Cotton is the fabric to ask for in white — it holds its shape in heat and it does not go translucent the way a thin poly does.
Blossom Floral Cotton Dress with Flared Sleeves — $207
White cotton ground with hydrangea blue, poppy orange and violet blooms, a sweetheart neckline, flared sleeves you can push up, and a row of pearl beading along the neck and the sleeve edge. The pearls are the reason this one reads bridal-shower rather than brunch.
Scarf Print Resort Dress — from $88
An ivory ground, not a bright white — a scarf print of butterflies, cartouches and a single band of tomato red, finished with a dark contrast binding and a side slit. Sleeveless shift shape. The one to pack for Greece or Mexico.
Sia Boho Jacket — $128
Not a dress — an open white jacket, brushstroked in turquoise and ink, with crochet lace running down the front edges and around the cuffs. This is how you make a white look work after sundown, or over a dress you already own.
Where white works, and where it does not
The one hard rule: you are not a wedding guest in white. Nothing in that family either — ivory, cream, champagne, eggshell, or a pale blush that will read white in the photographs. Where white is the right answer:
- Your own bridal shower — white is traditionally the bride's, and guests are told to stay off it. If you are the bride, this is your colour. More in What to Wear to a Bridal Shower, or shop bridal shower dresses.
- Bachelorette and engagement party — same logic, less formality. The Jasmina or the Blossom.
- A white party — Mykonos, Ibiza, a Fourth of July terrace. A white-ground print still counts and saves you from standing in a sea of identical linen.
- Graduation and christening — white under a gown, white in a church, both work. See What to Wear to a Baby Shower.

Four things I check before I buy anything white
Hold it up to a window. Sheerness is the single failure of a white dress, and you cannot see it under shop lighting. Cotton, cotton voile and a heavier blend behave; thin woven polyester does not.
Ask whether it is lined, and where. A bodice lining is not a skirt lining. If only the top is lined, you are wearing a slip underneath whether you planned to or not.
Check what the white actually is. Optic white, ivory, cream and bone photograph as four different colours, and they do different things against skin. If white has never felt right on you, it is usually the shade, not the colour — I go through how to work that out in How to Tell Whether a Colour Suits You.
Decide if you want white, or the white look. A print on a white ground reads white from a distance, hides the things solid white announces, and will not get you in trouble at someone else's wedding. How to style a white dress
Shoes are where a white dress is won or lost. Against a white-ground print, pull the shoe from a colour already in the print and the whole thing locks together: tomato red sandals with the Scarf dress, cobalt with the Tulip.

Questions I get asked
Can I wear a white dress to a wedding?
Not as a guest, unless the couple has asked you to in writing. That includes ivory, cream, champagne and anything that will read white in a photograph. White is for the events around the wedding, not the wedding.
Can the bride wear white to her own bridal shower?
Yes, and it is the convention. The usual advice is to pick something that does not compete with the wedding dress — shorter, lighter, less formal. The Jasmina or the Blossom do that job.
Are white dresses see-through?
Thin ones are. Cotton and cotton voile are safer than a lightweight woven polyester. Hold any white dress up to daylight before you commit, and wear underwear closer to your skin tone than to the dress — white underwear under white fabric is more visible, not less.
What shoes go with a white dress?
Red, black, olive, white, tan or grey all work. With a printed white dress, take the shoe colour from the print.
Is this a white dress or a printed dress?
Both, mostly. The Jasmina is solid white. The Tulip, Freesia and Blossom are hand-drawn prints on a white cotton ground, so they read white across a room and colour up close. The Scarf dress is ivory rather than bright white.

Where are these made?
I design every print myself in Scottsdale, Arizona. The hand beading and hand embroidery are done by artisans in India, which is where I learned to love this work in the first place — my mother and my aunts embroidered, knitted and wove at home.
