If you have been defaulting to a black dress for occasions, the industry has moved. WWD reported in May that wedding guest dresses are "getting their personality back" after years of the little black dress and subdued minimalism. Katie Hobbs of Cara Cara told them "colour is the biggest story, and 2026 is being defined by high saturation across the board," and Grace Lee Chen of Birdy Grey described "a huge uptick in brighter, bolder colour choices: think chartreuse, fuchsia, poppy orange." Brides, she added, are actively encouraging it.

Who What Wear's five key guest trends for 2026 land on icy pink, fawn print and simply being expressive, and their six trends for stylish guests say much the same. For a cold-weather shower, The Zoe Report's rule is the useful one: heavier, richer fabrics rather than a summer dress with a coat over it.

I have been making loud printed dresses for fifteen years, so I am not a neutral party here. But a shower is a daytime event in a room full of photographs, and a print is the thing that stops you disappearing into them.

The question nobody answers

If you are going to the wedding too, can you repeat the dress? Generally no, if the guest lists overlap and there will be photographs at both. A shower is daytime and lighter; a wedding is dressier. Buying the shower dress with that in mind — something you will wear again to a brunch, a christening, a birthday — is more useful than buying something you will only wear once.

A shower is usually daytime, often at someone's home, and frequently spans three generations of a family. A midi is the safest length by some distance. Save minis for a young, casual, evening shower.
