A graduation dress has to do two jobs: work under a gown for the ceremony, and carry the day afterwards — the photographs with family, the dinner, the party. These are designer dresses in exclusive prints drawn in-house by Sandhya Garg, Project Runway Season 13, in mini, midi and maxi lengths, sizes XS through 3XL.
Choose a midi. Most gowns hit mid-calf, so a midi ending above that hem reads intentional, while a maxi peeking out underneath looks like a mistake. A mini disappears entirely under the gown, which is fine if you're changing afterwards.
Prioritise breathability over the print. Graduation gowns are unlined polyester and trap heat, and most ceremonies are outdoors in May or June. Cotton poplin and viscose linen stay cool underneath; heavy or lined fabrics don't. The Yellow, Pink and Black Square-Neck Poplin Fit & Flare Maxis are 100% cotton and the most comfortable option for a long, hot ceremony.
Only two things show while the gown is on: your neckline and your shoes. A square neck, halter or one-shoulder reads well above a gown collar; a strapless dress disappears. Choose shoes you can walk across a stage in — the photographs are taken from the front and below.
This is where the dress actually gets seen. The Carolina Pink One-Shoulder Maxi and Sophie Green Midi carry Versailles-inspired scrollwork prints that photograph beautifully. The Marie Pink Mini has hand-embroidered detail for a shorter, dressier look. The Louis Halter Midi and Queen Wrap Midi work across the ceremony and dinner without a change. Prices run $228 to $328.
You'll be photographed as much as the graduate, and often outdoors for hours. A wrap or fit-and-flare midi is the reliable choice — the Duchess Red Kaftan, Begum Burgundy Shirt Dress and Tangier Ombre Midi all work. For layering in a cool morning ceremony, the Allie Black Blazer and Fleur Blue Tapestry Jacket both work over a sleeveless dress. Avoid white if the graduate is wearing it, and check whether the school has colours you'd rather not clash with.
Bold shades — royal blue, hot pink, yellow, coral — stand out in group photographs and read well against dark gowns. If the gown is black, navy or maroon, a vibrant dress underneath creates a good reveal when it comes off. Black and white work with any gown colour. Prints hide creasing across a long day better than solids do.
Grad trips get booked at the same time as the ceremony outfit. If a cruise, a beach week or a family holiday is next, see resort wear, cruise wear, vacation wear, cover-ups and kaftans — most of it packs flat and doubles for dinner.
Shop by length in midi, maxi and mini dresses, or by style in wrap, A-line, floral, one shoulder and halter. Related occasions: party, cocktail, homecoming, formal and plus size occasion dresses. For layering, see embroidered jackets.

What do you wear under a graduation gown?
A midi dress in a breathable fabric is the best choice. Gowns are unlined polyester and trap heat, and most ceremonies run long and often outdoors, so cotton poplin or viscose linen keeps you comfortable. Only your neckline and shoes are visible while the gown is on, so choose a neckline that reads well above the collar and shoes you can walk in.
What length dress is best for graduation?
Midi. Most gowns fall to mid-calf, so a midi ending above the gown hem looks deliberate, while a maxi showing beneath it looks unintentional. A mini is fine if you're changing for the celebration afterwards. If there's no gown — outdoor ceremonies and garden receptions — a maxi works well.
What colour should I wear to graduation?
Bold colours like royal blue, hot pink, yellow and coral stand out in group photographs and contrast well against dark gowns. Black and white work with any gown colour. If you're a guest, avoid white when the graduate is wearing it, and check the school colours if you'd rather not clash in photographs.
What should a mom wear to her child's graduation?
A wrap or fit-and-flare midi in a print or jewel tone — polished, comfortable for several hours, and photograph-ready, since parents appear in almost as many photos as graduates. Bring a jacket for a cool morning ceremony, and choose block heels or flats if the ceremony is on grass or a sports field.
Can I wear the same dress to the ceremony and the party?
Yes, and it's the practical choice — a midi in a good fabric handles both. Change your shoes and jewellery between the two and the outfit reads differently. If the party is significantly dressier, a mini or a maxi as a second look works, but one well-chosen dress usually covers the whole day.
★★★★★Kate CComfy yet feminine!
I got this navy floral dress and love it. It has a bright yet soft look. The material is light and cool making it wearable in warm or cool weather. Very comfortable and feminine feeling. Nice length- not too long or short - and great for dancing! It looked huge at first but fits great once I put it on. Love the boho style too.

★★★★★Ria LI love this dress
I loved this dress, As far as fit goes, the dress fits better on the bottom if you have hips and a butt. I do not fill out the dress well on the bottom, but that’s ok it’s still beautiful. This dress is stunning, I absolutely love it, I bought it for a friends wedding. I got tons of compliments on it! Highly recommend.

This shirt can be worn when you want to dress up or wear as a casual outfit! All you need!
Fabric is light weight and beautiful. Hits just right in length. Beautiful
Absolutely love this top!! So flattering and super comfortable I don’t have to worry about it riding up or anything.
These match perfectly with the stretch wide leg pants that I purchased. Ordered a size small and I’m 5’4, 130lb and the size small is perfect and very flattering!
These pants are so light and comfy- great for summer! I went with a large but easily could have done a medium since the waist is kind of loose. I have big hips though so I like the extra room.
