Baby Shower Dresses for Guests and Mom-to-Be: Wrap, Swing and Flowy Styles

Filter

A baby shower sits in an awkward spot on the dressing scale — more festive than a lunch, nowhere near a wedding. It's daytime, there are photographs, there are usually games involving sitting on the floor, and the attention belongs to someone else. This edit is cut for exactly that: celebratory, comfortable for a long afternoon, in exclusive artisan prints, sizes XS through 3XL, by Project Runway Season 13 designer Sandhya Garg. Prices run $228 to $378.

Who What Wear put the brief better than I could in their spring baby shower guide: you want "something celebratory but not overly formal, polished but still comfortable enough to sit through the games, brunch, and hours of catching up."

    If you're the guest

A floral or soft-toned midi is the lowest-risk choice made. The Kiara Floral Dress and Rosa Pink Plisse read celebratory without competing, and the Rara Lavender Off-Shoulder Dress steps things up for a dressier shower.

    If you're the mom-to-be

These aren't maternity-cut — but several silhouettes here genuinely work over a bump, and keep working afterwards. The Mughal, Shahe and Shyla wrap dresses adjust to your shape rather than a fixed size. The Mosaic Swing Dress and the Samode, Jharokha and Mahal maxis fall from above the bump rather than across it. That's a deliberate choice: a dress you'll still wear a year from now beats one you wear once.

The shape that is having a moment is the one that already works

This is convenient timing. The biggest maternity style story of 2026 has been Anne Hathaway's press tour for The Odyssey, and the silhouette she kept returning to is the empire-waist, floor-grazing goddess dress — exactly the cut that falls from above a bump.

W Magazine described one look, a custom GapStudio gown by Zac Posen, as "a fluid charmeuse fabric, reminiscent of water rippling along the body". The Zoe Report ran the whole tour as maternity fashion ruling the red carpet.

And WWD made the broader point in August, comparing her 2026 wardrobe with her pregnancies in 2016 and 2019: "Maternity wear is not what it used to be. Clothes for pregnant bodies have drastically changed over the course of the last decade."

What changed is that nobody is hiding anything any more. The clothes frame the bump rather than disguising it, and that is why a well-cut wrap or an empire-waist maxi beats a tent every time. It is also why I would rather sell you a dress that works in month seven and still works next summer.

    On colour

Unlike a wedding, there's no rule reserving white for the guest of honour — but if the shower has a stated palette, or you know the mom-to-be is in white, pick something else. Soft pinks, blues, lavender, sage and florals all suit the occasion. Skip anything that reads as evening wear.

    Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a baby shower?

A baby shower is usually a daytime, semi-formal occasion. A floral or pastel midi dress with flats or low heels is the most reliable choice — polished, comfortable for several hours, and photographs well. Match the venue: a garden shower suits a floral sundress, a restaurant calls for something more structured. Avoid evening wear, anything very short, and strong fragrance.

Can you wear white to a baby shower?

Usually yes. Unlike a wedding, there's no etiquette rule reserving white for the guest of honour. That said, if the invitation states a colour theme, or you know the mom-to-be plans to wear white, choosing another shade is a kind move. Ivory or cream with a print is a safe middle ground.

What colour should a guest wear to a baby shower?

Soft pastels, florals, sage, lavender and dusty blues all suit the celebratory daytime tone. If the shower has a gender-reveal theme, pink or blue may be requested. Black isn't forbidden but can read sombre for a daytime celebration — if you wear it, choose a print or a bright accessory to lift it.

What should the mom-to-be wear to her baby shower?

Choose a silhouette that falls from above the bump rather than across it: wrap dresses, empire waists, swing dresses and flowy maxis all work. Comfort matters more than usual — you'll be photographed, opening gifts, and on your feet. Many women prefer a non-maternity dress in a forgiving cut so it stays wearable after the birth.

Can you wear a non-maternity dress over a bump?

Yes, if the silhouette is right. Wrap dresses adjust to your shape via the tie rather than a fixed waist. Swing, empire-waist and A-line dresses fall from the bust, leaving room through the middle. Fitted, structured or dropped-waist styles generally won't work. Sizing up in a fitted dress rarely helps, as the shoulders and bust then fit poorly.

What is the most flattering maternity silhouette?

The empire waist, and it is not close. The seam sits under the bust and everything below falls free, which is why it has been the maternity shape for two centuries and why it dominated Anne Hathaway's 2026 red carpets. A bias-cut maxi does the same job with more movement. Both photograph better than a fitted dress with a panel.

Will a baby shower dress still fit after the birth?

A wrap will, because the tie moves with you. A swing or empire-waist dress usually will too. That is the argument for buying a well-cut non-maternity dress rather than a maternity one — you get one afternoon out of a maternity dress and several years out of a wrap.

    Comfy yet feminine!

I got this navy floral dress and love it. It has a bright yet soft look. The material is light and cool making it wearable in warm or cool weather. Very comfortable and feminine feeling. Nice length- not too long or short - and great for dancing! It looked huge at first but fits great once I put it on. Love the boho style too.

    I love this dress

I loved this dress, As far as fit goes, the dress fits better on the bottom if you have hips and a butt. I do not fill out the dress well on the bottom, but that’s ok it’s still beautiful. This dress is stunning, I absolutely love it, I bought it for a friends wedding. I got tons of compliments on it! Highly recommend.
