You will be seated for most of it, often three hours, and photographed the whole time — so the test is not how a dress looks standing in a mirror, it is how it behaves when you sit down. Four silhouettes handle that and, more importantly, keep working afterwards: empire, A-line, wrap and kaftan. None depends on a fitted waist seam landing in a fixed place, which is exactly why they survive a body that is changing weekly. For guests: wear a colour rather than the shower's palette — pastel-themed rooms swallow pastel-dressed guests.
Most writing about baby shower dressing is about how the day feels rather than how the afternoon actually goes. Which is a shame, because the afternoon has a very particular shape — a lot of sitting, a lot of hugging, a warm room full of people, and more photographs than any ordinary day.
I am a Project Runway designer who grades every style in this collection, and I want to be straightforward before anything else: we do not make maternity wear. What follows is honest about what that means, and about which non-maternity silhouettes genuinely work here and which do not.
Said Plainly, Before You Shop
Nothing on this page is designed, graded or tested as maternity wear. Some silhouettes accommodate a bump well because of how they are constructed — but that is a happy consequence, not a designed feature, and I would rather say so than let you find out on the day. If you are in the third trimester, size up and check the underbust measurement on the size chart rather than going by your usual size, since that is where a non-maternity garment will fail first.
The other honest thing: you probably should not buy a dedicated maternity dress for one afternoon. The four silhouettes below all continue to work after the baby arrives, which makes them a far better purchase than something you will wear once and never again.
Four Silhouettes That Work Now and Later
What these four have in common is structural: none of them relies on a waist seam sitting at a fixed point on the body. That is the whole reason they cope with a shape that is changing week to week — and the same reason they still fit six months later.

Opening gifts, playing games, eating — a shower is a seated event. Sit down in the fitting room, cross your ankles, and reach forward. A dress that rides up or presses across the bump when seated will make three hours feel like six.
The room will be warm
Temperature regulation is genuinely harder in late pregnancy, and showers are indoors with a lot of people in a small space. Cotton, linen and viscose breathe; polyester does not. This is the one occasion where fibre content is a comfort decision rather than a quality one.
You will be hugged, repeatedly
Every guest will embrace you, and several will touch the bump. Anything strapless, or anything needing rearrangement after contact, is the wrong choice for this specific day. Straps that stay put are worth more than any styling detail.
