Sandhya Garg — Where To Go
The Best Beach Resort Destinations in the USA
8 Destinations · When To Go · What Each Dress Code Means · 10 Picks · XS–3XL
Quick Answer
The strongest US beach resort destinations for 2026 are La Jolla and Santa Barbara in California, Key West and Florida's Gulf Coast, Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, Nantucket in New England, and O'ahu and Kaua'i in Hawaii. They are not interchangeable — and the thing that actually changes what you pack is not the weather, it's the evening. A Gulf Coast dinner is genuinely casual; Nantucket and Montecito are not. The reliable answer everywhere: a printed maxi or kaftan that works as a cover-up by day and a dress by night, plus one piece a step dressier than you think you need.
Most "best beaches in America" lists are written by people who have never had to get dressed at one. They rank sand quality and water clarity, which is useful right up until seven o'clock, when you discover that the restaurant everyone recommended does not seat people in swim shorts and you have packed nothing else.
So this guide does both. Eight destinations worth the flight, when to go, and — the part nobody writes down — what each one expects you to wear after dark. As a Project Runway designer whose collection is largely resort wear, this is the question I get asked more than any other. For inland and non-coastal options, see weekend resort getaways in the US.
Eight Destinations, and What Each Evening Asks For
| Destination | Go when | The evening bar |
|---|---|---|
| La Jolla, California | Year-round; Sept–Oct is warmest water | Polished casual — a good dress, flat sandals |
| Santa Barbara, California | May–October | The dressiest on this list. Pack accordingly |
| Key West, Florida | December–April | Relaxed and unbothered — but not swimwear |
| Clearwater & the Gulf Coast | March–May, then October | Genuinely casual. A sundress is plenty |
| Myrtle Beach, South Carolina | May–September | Family-casual; one dressier night for the resort |
| Nantucket, Massachusetts | June–September only | Quietly formal. Bring a layer — evenings turn |
| O'ahu, Hawaii | April–June, September–November | Resort casual; a maxi reads correctly everywhere |
| Kaua'i, Hawaii | April–June, September–November | The most relaxed island. Print over polish |
Shoulder season is doing real work in that middle column. Florida in March and Hawaii in October give you the same water at a fraction of the crowd — and, in Florida's case, without the August humidity that makes anything structured unwearable.
Three Coasts, Three Completely Different Wardrobes
The single most useful thing to understand before packing is which coast you are on. They do not dress alike, and the difference is bigger than the difference between two countries on the Mediterranean.
The Gulf & Florida
Humidity is the whole story. Loose beats fitted, cotton and linen beat everything synthetic, and one excellent cover-up beats three. Evenings stay warm, so you rarely need a layer — which frees up the space to bring one properly good dress.
The Atlantic & New England
The temperature drops the moment the sun does, every single night, and visitors are consistently caught out. This is the only coast where the third layer is non-negotiable. Dress codes also run quietly stricter here than anywhere else on the list.
The Pacific & Hawaii
California beaches are colder than the photographs suggest, and marine layer mornings are real. Hawaii runs warm and consistent but genuinely humid. Both reward print and colour — flat neutrals look washed out in that light.
What Changed in 2026
Two things worth knowing before you book. First, the top of the US beach rankings moved. Tripadvisor's 2026 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Beaches, drawn from a full year of traveller reviews, put La Jolla Cove in California at number one in the United States — ahead of the Florida and Hawaii names that usually take it. Fewer than 1% of Tripadvisor's eight million listings earn the award at all. The reasoning given was telling: it went to a beach you do something at, not one you simply sit on.
Second, the bookings tell a different story from the rankings. Tripadvisor's 2026 Summer Travel Index found Myrtle Beach was the most-booked US domestic beach destination this summer, with Key West, Panama City Beach and Clearwater also landing in the top ten — East Coast and Florida sweeping the list. Which is to say: the beach critics love and the beach America actually books are not the same beach, and both are worth your attention for different reasons.
The beach is easy to pack for. The dinner after it is the part people get wrong — and it is the same mistake at every one of these eight destinations.
How to Pack for a US Beach Resort
Domestic travel tempts everyone into overpacking, because the bag is going in a car or a short flight and there is no obvious penalty. The penalty arrives at the other end, in a small resort wardrobe, with eleven things you will not wear. Four rules cover it.
Four Rules for a Beach Resort Suitcase
1. Every day piece must survive salt, sand and sunscreen. Cotton, linen and georgette all wash and dry easily. Save the hand-beading for evening, where it will not meet a sunscreen hand.
2. Buy cover-ups that are actually dresses. A kaftan that only works over a swimsuit takes up the same space as one that also works at dinner. There is no reason to choose the first.
3. Pack one dress a step above the dress code. It weighs nothing and it is the difference between saying yes and saying no when a good restaurant appears.
4. Print over accessories. One strong print in strong coastal light does more than a jewellery roll, takes no room, and photographs far better than a flat neutral does at golden hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best beach in the USA right now?
La Jolla Cove in San Diego took the number one US spot in Tripadvisor's 2026 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Beaches, ranked on a full year of traveller reviews. It beat the Florida and Hawaii names that usually top the list. By bookings rather than reviews, Myrtle Beach was the most-booked US domestic beach destination for summer 2026.
Which US beach destination is best for a luxury resort stay?
Santa Barbara and Montecito in California, Nantucket in Massachusetts, and the resort corridors of Maui and Kaua'i sit at the top end. These are also the destinations with the highest evening dress expectations — pack at least one properly dressy piece for any of them.
When is the cheapest time to visit a US beach resort?
Shoulder season. Florida and the Gulf Coast are best value in late April, May and October; Hawaii in April to early June and again in September to November; New England is a summer-only proposition, so early June and September are the value windows. You get near-identical water at a fraction of the crowd.
How many outfits do I need for a week at a US beach resort?
Two kaftans or cover-up dresses, two day dresses, one dressier evening piece and one layer. Six garments, in a shared colour family, will cover seven days comfortably — provided the cover-ups genuinely work as dresses rather than only over swimwear.
Which US beach destination is best in winter?
Key West and the Florida Keys are at their best from December through April, when the humidity drops and the temperature stays warm. Southern California is swimmable-adjacent year round but genuinely cool in the water. Hawaii is reliable in every month. New England is not a winter option.
Do US beach resorts have an evening dress code?
Rarely a written one, but almost always an observed one, and it varies enormously by region. Gulf Coast and Key West restaurants are genuinely relaxed. Santa Barbara, Nantucket and higher-end Hawaii resorts expect a real dress. Nowhere on this list will seat you in swimwear, whatever the sign says.
What colours work best in strong coastal light?
Saturated colour and print. Hard sun and reflected water bleach out pale neutrals and washed pastels, which is why beige-heavy holiday wardrobes photograph so flatly. Coral, cobalt, emerald and strong prints hold their depth in that light and read well at golden hour.
