Quick Answer

For a fall wedding, wear richer color and fabric than you would in summer. In September, choose cotton and warm prints. In October, go for jewel tones, dark florals and heavier satin. In November, reach for velvet, embroidery and long sleeves. Wear floor length for black tie and a midi for cocktail, and bring a layer for the evening.

  • September: still warm in much of the US, so keep the fabric light and bring fall in through color.
  • October: plum, burgundy, saffron, terracotta and forest green.
  • November: long sleeves, velvet and handwork like embroidery and beading.
  • Skip: pastels, and white, ivory or champagne.
  • Over 40 or 50? A wrap waist and a sleeve you love work at every dress code.

Fall is my favorite wedding season to dress for, and plenty of couples agree. Vogue says fall has become the preferred season to get married, and Refinery29 points out that the most popular wedding months fall later in the year. The light turns golden and the colors get richer, which is exactly when a print dress looks its best.

I trained at London College of Fashion and Alexander McQueen, competed on Project Runway Season 13, and I design every print in my collection myself. This guide is how I would dress for a fall wedding month by month, from a warm September vineyard to a candlelit November reception, with the colors, dress codes and venues to plan around and the dresses from my fall edit. Everything comes in sizes XS to 3XL, and the full edit lives in my fall wedding guest dresses collection.

What to Wear to a September Wedding

September is summer with better light. In much of the US it is still warm, and here in Scottsdale it is still properly hot. Marie Claire named cotton dresses and plaid prints among the pieces that ease the move from late summer into fall, and that is the right instinct: keep the fabric breathable and bring fall in through color.

My Jharokha maxi is rust-orange cotton poplin with a hakoba embroidery ruffle at the V-neck, a pumpkin-season color on a dress that still breathes on a hot afternoon. The Samode maxi is royal blue cotton poplin with the same hakoba ruffle. Both have a skirt that moves when you dance. Bring a light layer for after sunset; my Fleur jacket goes over either one.

What to Wear to an October Wedding

October is peak fall wedding season, and this is when color does the work. Vogue tells guests to steer clear of anything too light or pastel and to choose richer fabrics and tactile textures. Its fall wedding guest dress edit names the palette in four words: “Plum, burgundy, saffron, terracotta.” Marie Claire pointed to the dark florals of Ulla Johnson and Hills House Home as a fall 2026 highlight, and Who What Wear reported fall satin getting heavier, with thicker duchess satin and taffeta in demand.

My Zoe jacket dress is textured cotton in a forest green, burgundy and pink print, with pleats, a shell trim and one bare shoulder. The Duchess kaftan is a red and pink print in viscose linen satin, with elbow-length sleeves and a waist tie. For a mountain wedding, Vogue suggests forest green to echo the foliage, which is exactly where the Zoe belongs.

What to Wear to a November Wedding

By November the evenings are cold and the parties start to feel like the holidays. This is the month for long sleeves, velvet and handwork. Vogue called a dramatic, floor-sweeping dress with long sleeves the chicest choice for fall, and Who What Wear saw fall 2026 runways from Dior to Conner Ives lean into brocade, embroidery, tapestry and velvet, with simple silhouettes giving way to opulence.

My Gaudi velvet wrap is velvet printed in teal, blue and purple, with long sleeves and a wrap waist. The Opal wrap dress is sparkly black and gold georgette with sheer balloon sleeves, and the Velvet Green is striped metallic velvet with an oversized bow. Vogue also named Art Deco this season's biggest guest trend, with one piece of advice I love: “Let one Deco-inspired element take the lead.” For a late-November or December date, my guide to what to wear to a winter wedding picks up where this one ends.

What Colors to Wear to a Fall Wedding

The best colors for a fall wedding are rich, earthy and jewel-toned: burgundy, plum, rust, terracotta, saffron, forest green, emerald and deep red. Vogue reported red still leading the fall 2026 color trends, with burgundy back as “the ultimate cold-weather classic.” For guests specifically, Vogue said the purple palette reigns this fall, from lilac to wine, and WWD found emerald and sapphire in almost every New York eveningwear collection.

Prints belong in fall as well. Vogue saw artsy prints in clashing colors at Chanel, Celine and Proenza Schouler, and a print on a deep or warm ground reads autumnal right away. The Begum is my answer when you want solid color instead: deep burgundy cotton poplin with full sleeves and a bow.

The colors to skip are pastels and anything the bride might wear, meaning white, ivory and champagne. It's also worth asking what the bridesmaids are wearing so you don't match them.

Can you wear black to a fall wedding?

Yes. Vogue answered the question “unequivocally, yes,” and its fall edit calls a seasonal, longer version of the little black dress always appropriate for a city wedding. Give black a warm partner, like the gold running through my Opal.

Fall Wedding Dress Codes

Start with the invitation. The Emily Post Institute says the invitation and the time of day are your best guide to how formal a wedding is. Here is how each code translates in fall.

Dress code What to wear in fall Try
Black tie Floor length is the safest choice. Vogue is strict about it: floor-length gowns and no midis. Marquis royal blue embroidered maxi, $328
Black tie optional & formal Floor length, or a very dressy midi in velvet, sparkle or beading. Gaudi velvet wrap, $398
Cocktail Knee to midi length in a dressy fabric or a strong print, with heels. Zoe jacket dress, $358
Semi-formal & daytime A midi with sleeves, in a rich color or print. Queen wrap midi, $258
Casual, vineyard & barn A breathable maxi or midi, block heels and a jacket for later. Jharokha maxi, $298

When you can't decide, go dressier: a stylist in the same Vogue guide said “it's always safer to be a bit overdressed than underdressed.” For invented codes like California formal or Gatsby chic, see every new-age wedding dress code explained.

Sleeves and Layers

Sleeves are the most requested fall detail, and they solve the cold-ceremony problem beautifully. Vogue put it well: a long-sleeve dress means you might be able to leave the shawl or coat at home, and it suits church ceremonies especially. The Queen wrap midi has puff sleeves in soft viscose, the Sophie has bell sleeves and a scalloped lace hem, and the Fes pairs one long sleeve with one bare shoulder in a vintage geometric print.

If you love a sleeveless dress, layer a statement jacket over it. My Fleur tapestry jacket is hand beaded by artisans in India, and it goes over a maxi, a kaftan or a velvet dress. See more of my one-of-a-kind jackets.

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding, by Venue

The venue tells you almost as much as the month. Here is how I would dress for the five fall settings I hear about most.

01. A vineyard or orchard

Grass, gravel and golden hour

Choose a midi you can walk through grass in, with block heels. The Queen or the Sophie with a jacket for sunset is my pick.

02. A barn or ranch

Rustic, cooler after dark

Sleeves, a rich solid color and dressy boots. The Begum in burgundy is made for this. More ideas in my rustic country wedding outfit guide.

03. The mountains

Cold evenings, big views

Forest green, as Vogue suggests, plus a real layer. The Zoe with the Fleur jacket and a warm coat for photos outside.

04. A city hotel or restaurant

Evening, dressy, indoors

A longer black dress is always right in the city, per Vogue. The Opal in black and gold sparkle, or the Gaudi velvet wrap.

05. Somewhere still warm

Arizona, Texas, Florida, Southern California

October afternoons can feel like summer in the Southwest and the South. Wear fall colors in breathable fabric: the Jharokha in rust-orange cotton, or the Duchess kaftan in viscose linen satin.

Fall Wedding Guest Outfits for Women Over 40 and 50

Most of my customers are in their thirties, forties and fifties, and fall weddings bring the same questions every year: how do I stay warm without looking covered up, and what still feels like me? Here is what I tell them.

Set your own waist. A wrap or a tie lets you place the waist exactly where you like it. The Queen is a wrap, and the Duchess has a waist tie.

Pick the sleeve you love. Puff, bell, balloon or one dramatic long sleeve. A sleeve adds warmth and presence at the same time.

Wear fall color near your face. Burgundy, rust and forest green warm up your skin in low autumn light.

Love your body as it is. Dress to celebrate the feature you like best. For more ideas, read my guide to what to wear to a wedding reception over 40.

Fall Wedding Guest Dos and Don'ts

✅ The Dos

01 · Dress for the month

September can be hot and November can be cold. Check the forecast for the venue, not your own town.

02 · Wear rich color

Burgundy, plum, rust, forest green, or black with gold. Fall light makes them glow.

03 · Plan a layer for sunset

A jacket, a wrap or a sleeve you'll be glad of after dark, and one you'd happily see in photos.

04 · Choose block heels outdoors

Grass, gravel and vineyard rows swallow stilettos. A block heel or dressy boot keeps you steady.

05 · Ask about the bridesmaids' color

A quick question saves you from matching the wedding party.

❌ The Don'ts

01 · Don't wear white, ivory or champagne

Those belong to the bride, in every season.

02 · Don't wear pastels

Vogue says to steer clear of anything too light or pastel in fall. Save them for spring.

03 · Don't wear thin summer fabric in November

Gauze and light linen look chilly once the leaves are down.

04 · Don't wear a short dress to strict black tie

Floor length is the safe choice when the invitation says black tie.

05 · Don't forget the evening

Fall evenings cool fast. A sleeveless dress with no layer means goosebumps by the first dance.

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding: FAQs

What should a female guest wear to a fall wedding?

Wear a dress in a richer color and fabric than summer: a warm print or cotton maxi in September, jewel tones and dark florals in October, and velvet, embroidery or long sleeves in November. Choose floor length for black tie and knee to midi length for cocktail, and bring a layer for the evening.

What colors should you wear to a fall wedding?

Rich, earthy and jewel tones: burgundy, plum, rust, terracotta, saffron, forest green, emerald and deep red. Vogue named burgundy the classic cold-weather color for fall 2026. Skip pastels, avoid white, ivory and champagne, and check the bridesmaids' color so you don't match.

Can you wear black to a fall wedding?

Yes. Vogue answered the question with an unequivocal yes, and a longer black dress is always appropriate for a city or evening wedding. Add a warm element such as gold, sparkle, embroidery or a colored bag so the look feels celebratory.

What should you wear to an October wedding?

October is peak fall wedding season. Choose rich color such as plum, burgundy, saffron, terracotta or forest green, in a fabric with some weight, like printed cotton, satin or viscose. A sleeve or a jacket helps once the sun goes down.

What should you wear to a November wedding?

November calls for long sleeves, velvet and handwork such as embroidery or beading, in jewel tones or black with gold. Floor length suits formal evening weddings, and a tailored coat or statement jacket keeps you warm for photos outside.

Do you need sleeves for a fall wedding?

Not always. In September a sleeveless dress is usually fine. For October and November, especially outdoors or at a church ceremony, long sleeves or a jacket are more comfortable, and a long-sleeve dress can mean leaving the shawl or coat at home.

What should a woman over 50 wear to a fall wedding?

A midi or maxi with a sleeve you love, a defined waist and a rich color or print near your face. A wrap or waist tie is the most adjustable choice. Add block heels for outdoor venues and a jacket or wrap for the evening.
