What to Wear to a Barn or Country Wedding

Quick Answer
Three things about a barn decide your outfit. The floor — plank boards with gaps between them, and gravel or grass outside, which rules out stilettos entirely; wear a block heel, a wedge or boots. The light is warm — string lights and low sun push cool colours grey, so rust, marigold, burgundy and emerald glow where icy blue and lilac go muddy. And a barn has no heating, so the temperature drops hard after sunset and there's nowhere to escape it. Bring a layer you're happy to be photographed in, because it isn't coming off.
Barn and ranch weddings are some of the loveliest to attend — wildflowers, long tables, string lights, dancing until late. They're also the venue where the most guests turn up in something that fights the setting all evening, usually because the advice online is about mood boards rather than about barns.
I'm a Project Runway designer and I ship from Scottsdale, Arizona, which is ranch wedding country. Here's what the venue actually does to your outfit.

The Three Things a Barn Does to an Outfit
1 · The floor has gaps in it
This is the most useful thing anyone can tell you about a barn wedding and almost nobody does. Barn floors are laid planks, and planks have gaps between them. A stiletto heel drops straight into one — usually on the dance floor, usually in front of everybody. Outside it's worse: gravel paths, dirt tracks and grass, all of which a thin heel sinks into. Block heels, wedges, elegant flats or boots. Nothing narrow. Then choose your hem length to suit the shoe, not the other way round.
2 · The light is warm, so cool colours go grey
Barn weddings are lit by low afternoon sun, then string lights and lanterns — all warm-toned. Warm light drains cool colours: icy blue, lilac and cool pastels photograph grey and slightly dirty under it, which is why so many barn wedding photos look flatter than the evening felt. Warm and jewel shades do the opposite and glow: rust, terracotta, marigold, burgundy, emerald, deep teal. Wildflower prints work for the same reason — they're built from exactly those colours. 3 · A barn has no heating, and often no walls
Open sides, high roofs, a concrete or earth floor and no radiators. Once the sun goes, the temperature drops hard and there is nowhere indoors to retreat to — that's the whole point of the venue. A layer isn't optional and it isn't temporary, so it can't be a coat you'd rather hide. Either sleeves built into the dress, or a jacket or kimono good enough to be in every photograph from eight o'clock onwards. Rural venues also tend to be further from anywhere; there's no nipping back to the hotel.

Country Wedding Guest Questions, Answered
What should a female guest wear to a country or barn wedding?
A midi or mini dress in a warm colour or wildflower print, with a block heel, wedge or boots, plus a real layer for the evening. Shirt dresses, wrap dresses and A-line shapes all suit the setting. Avoid stilettos, cool pastels and anything strapless in an open-sided venue.

Can you wear cowboy boots with a dress to a wedding?
Yes, and at a ranch or barn wedding they're genuinely practical as well as appropriate. They work best with a mini or a midi, where the boot is visible and deliberate. With a maxi the hem swallows the boot and you get the disadvantages of both.
What colours are best for a rustic wedding?
Warm and jewel tones: rust, terracotta, marigold, burgundy, emerald and deep teal. Barn lighting is warm — low sun, lanterns, string lights — and warm light pushes cool colours grey, so icy blue, lilac and cool pastels photograph muddy. Never white or ivory.
Will I be cold at a barn wedding?
Almost certainly, after sunset. Barns are unheated, often open-sided, and rural venues are usually far from anywhere you could nip back to. Choose a dress with sleeves, or a jacket or kimono you're happy to be photographed in, because it will stay on for the rest of the night.
Is a maxi dress too formal for a country wedding?
Not at all, but check the ground first. A maxi in cotton or a soft print reads relaxed rather than formal. Just be aware it will trail on dirt and grass, so a midi is often the more practical choice unless the paths are paved.
