It goes on over a wet swimsuit, gets sat on in sand, takes direct sun for six hours, picks up sunscreen, and then has to walk into a restaurant looking like you planned it. What a beach dress actually has to survive
Sand. A tight weave shakes clean; an open knit or crochet traps grit in the fibres and keeps it. If you sit on the sand, buy cotton poplin or a firm viscose, not a loose jersey. And watch the hem — a maxi that drags collects sand at the back and stays damp all afternoon.
Sunscreen. It marks. White streaks on a dark solid are obvious from across the beach and most of them do not wash out cleanly. A multicolour print hides them completely, which is the practical reason a printed beach dress outlasts a black one.
A wet swimsuit underneath. Everything shows through a thin fabric once it is damp. Cotton poplin is opaque enough to go straight over wet swimwear; fine jersey and anything sheer is not, unless you want it to be.

Beach weddings
This is where a beach dress stops being casual. A maxi or midi in a real fabric is the correct answer for a sand ceremony — the signals that matter are fabric (cotton poplin, linen, silk over synthetic), print (artisan over novelty) and silhouette (fit-and-flare or wrap over strapless).

One rule for sand: skip a stiletto. A block heel, a wedge or an embellished flat is the only thing that works, and bare feet are acceptable at most beach ceremonies.

Fabric and care
Cottons, poplins and linens: rinse salt and sand out in cold water, machine wash cold, hang dry out of direct sun, press on the reverse. Scuba knits need no ironing and travel better than anything else here. Silks, velvets and jacquards are dry clean. Salt water leaves rings on silk, so keep the silk pieces for the evening rather than the sand.
