A winter sun trip is unusually demanding on a suitcase, because it has to cover more registers than a summer holiday — you land from cold weather, and within a week you will want an adventure day, a good dinner, a pool or water park, and at least one evening out. Five questions decide whether a piece earns its space: is it easy to get on and off, does it need ironing, is it activity-friendly, does it work for more than one of those scenarios, and does it survive being packed. Anything that fails two of the five should stay at home.
Snow is beautiful for about four days. After that I start missing turquoise water and warm sand, and I know I am not alone — the winter sun trip is the one holiday people plan hardest for and pack worst for, because it has to work in two climates and four different kinds of evening.
I have looked back at a lot of holiday photographs and wondered why one dress made the day and another did not. It is almost never about how the dress looked. It is about how it behaved.
The Five Questions I Ask Before Anything Goes In

1 · The adventure day
A hike, a boat, a ruin, a market. Printed trousers with a plain top is my own default — it looks considered in photographs and behaves like activewear, which nothing else on a holiday list manages.
2 · The dinner you booked ahead
The tricky one — you do not want to under- or overdress. A structured fabric holds its shape after a day of travel, and a statement sleeve creates interest without shouting.
3 · The pool or water park
A cover-up you can pull on while wet and sticky. Bright, natural, lightweight, and quick to dry — most cover-ups get the job done and very few are worth looking at.
4 · The one glamorous night
A casino, a hotel bar, a New Year's dinner. This is where a jewel tone earns its place — deep colour reads as allure under low light where a pale shade disappears. One such dress per trip is enough.
5 · The party, and a note on beads
Sequins are the cliché. A hand-embroidered piece is the better buy — and if you are buying beadwork, look for glass beads rather than plastic. Glass catches light with depth and survives a decade; plastic goes dull and cannot be matched when one is lost.

A deep jewel tone. Bars and gaming floors are lit warm and low, which drains pale shades and deepens saturated ones — so emerald, sapphire or burgundy reads richer there than it does in daylight. Texture woven into the cloth beats anything applied on top of it.
One dress for both daytime and dinner — is it possible?
Yes, and it is the single most valuable thing in a suitcase. A kaftan with a waist tie is loose over a swimsuit at noon and defined for dinner at eight. A shirt dress does the same with a belt. Anything that only covers one scenario is expensive luggage.
