The Derby is the one occasion where you choose the hat first and the dress second, because the hat governs everything else. A wide brim casts a hard shadow over your face in every photograph taken between noon and five — which is the whole event — so pick the brim knowing that. An elaborate hat needs a quiet neckline, since the two compete for the same few inches. And pull the hat colour from the dress rather than matching it exactly. Then: bold colour, a midi or knee-length hem, block heels or wedges, and a layer, because Kentucky in May can be 50°F and raining or 85°F and humid.
Run on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby is the most fashion-conscious event in American sport — the one day a year when a woman in an enormous hat is the most normally dressed person in the room.
Most Derby guides tell you to wear a bold dress and a statement hat and leave it there. I'm a Project Runway designer, and the part nobody explains is how those two decisions fight each other.

Three Things Nobody Tells You About the Hat
1 · A wide brim puts your face in shadow — all day
The Derby runs through the brightest hours of a May afternoon, outdoors, with the sun almost overhead. A cartwheel brim will cast a hard line of shadow straight across your face in every single photograph taken during the event. That's the trade: maximum drama in the wide shot, your features lost in the close-up. If photographs matter to you, choose a smaller brim, an upturned brim, or a fascinator, all of which let light reach your face. Save the dramatic brim for an overcast Derby or for pictures taken in the shade of the grandstand.
2 · A big hat needs a quiet neckline
Your hat and your neckline occupy the same few inches of every photograph, and they compete. Elaborate hat, simple neckline. Statement neckline, smaller hat. Almost every Derby outfit that looks fussy rather than chic has committed to both at once — a huge brim above an off-shoulder ruffle, with nowhere for the eye to rest. A square neck, a round neck or a clean halter gives a big hat the space it needs.
3 · Pull the hat colour from the dress — don't match it
An exact colour match between hat and dress reads as a bought set. Taking a secondary colour out of a print looks composed and deliberate — a teal hat with a print that's mostly pink, say. Everywhere else, the hat is an accessory. At the Derby it's the brief. Choose it first and let the dress make room for it.
