Rows of vines, golden light and uneven ground: a vineyard wedding asks for romance and practicality in equal measure.

Quick Answer

For a vineyard wedding, wear a breathable midi or maxi dress in a print or seasonal colour, block heels or wedges that won't sink into grass or gravel, and bring a light jacket or wrap for the evening chill. Most vineyard weddings are cocktail or semi-formal. Avoid white, ivory and champagne, and for fall harvest weddings lean into burgundy, plum and jewel tones that look beautiful against the vines.

Few settings are as romantic as a vineyard: rows of vines turning gold, a long table under string lights, the sun dropping behind the hills just as the toasts begin. Few are as quietly tricky to dress for, either. You'll walk on grass and gravel, stand in afternoon sun, and feel the temperature fall the moment the light goes.

As a Project Runway designer who designs a lot of our dresses with weddings in mind — in sizes XS through 3XL — I've thought about vineyard weddings more than most. This guide covers vineyard dress codes, colours by season, what the wedding and fashion press is recommending now, ten guest rules, outfits for the whole wedding weekend, and twelve dresses and layers from our newest collection.

For fall in particular, the mood is rich. Wedding publication 100 Layer Cake highlights a shift toward moodier tones like plum, olive and terracotta alongside the classic burgundy-and-gold fall palette — the colours of a harvest-season vineyard.

Vineyard Wedding Dress Codes, Decoded

Always check the invitation or wedding website first. If it doesn't say, assume semi-formal. Here's what each dress code means among the vines — and our full guide to every wedding dress code goes deeper.

Casual / Daytime

Garden-party easy

A printed midi or sundress, flat sandals or espadrilles, a sun hat. Think long lunch in the vines. See casual wedding guest dresses.

Semi-Formal / Cocktail

The vineyard default

A midi or a flowing maxi in a print or rich colour, block heels or wedges, statement earrings. The most common vineyard dress code. Shop cocktail wedding guest dresses.

Formal

Estate elegance

A floor-length dress with embroidery or embellishment, an elevated block heel and a polished wrap for evening. Shop formal wedding guest dresses.

Black-Tie Optional

Gown, but grounded

A floor-length gown in a luxe fabric — just choose shoes that can handle a lawn. Bring a flat for the walk between ceremony and reception.

What Colours to Wear to a Vineyard Wedding, by Season

🌸 Spring

Budding vines, soft light

Pastels, blush, mint and florals. Lightweight fabrics, a midi length, and a light layer for cool evenings.

☀️ Summer

Full green, long golden hours

Bright prints and saturated colour that pop against green vines. Breathable cotton, linen blends and viscose; sunglasses for the ceremony.

🍇 Fall Harvest

Gold leaves, grapes on the vine

Burgundy, plum, olive, terracotta, royal blue. Who What Wear calls burgundy the shade practically made for fall, and names purple, red and blue among the colours that matter for fall 2026.

❄️ Winter

Bare vines, candlelit tasting rooms

Velvet, jewel tones and long sleeves. Emerald, teal and deep red look stunning indoors. Shop winter wedding guest dresses.

👗 One Dress, Every Dress Code

Reported by Who What Wear

Who What Wear's 2026 wedding-guest coverage has championed dresses versatile enough to work across dress codes — exactly why a great printed midi or maxi earns its place.

🎀 Romance & Embellishment

Reported by Harper's Bazaar

Harper’s Bazaar saw bows, embroidered details and romantic velvet draping across the fall 2026 collections — ideal details for an evening reception among the vines.

💜 Jewel Tones Look Expensive

Reported by Who What Wear

Royal purple, cobalt and burgundy are among fall 2026's biggest colours, according to Who What Wear — the kind of shades that photograph beautifully against vines and golden light.

10 Vineyard Wedding Guest Rules

01

Choose shoes for grass and gravel

Block heels, wedges and elegant flats won't sink between the vines or slip on gravel paths. Leave stilettos at home — or bring them only for the dance floor.

02

Skip white, ivory and champagne

Pale neutrals read bridal in photos, especially in golden light. Pick a print or a saturated colour instead.

03

Pick a length that suits the ground

Midi is the safest length on grass. If you love a maxi, choose one you can lift easily or that sits just above the ankle.

04

Pack a layer for sunset

Vineyards cool quickly once the sun drops. A cropped jacket, kimono or wrap turns your ceremony look into a reception look.

05

Plan for afternoon sun

Sunglasses for the ceremony, sunscreen on shoulders, and a breathable fabric so you're comfortable through the toasts.

06

Choose fabric that breathes

Viscose, cotton, linen blends and silky drapes keep you cool. Skip heavy synthetics that cling in the heat.

07

Let a print forgive the wine

It's a vineyard — there will be red wine. A printed dress hides the odd splash far better than a solid pale colour.

08

Contrast with the green

Burgundy, plum, cobalt, pink and red pop against vines and look beautiful in photos. Head-to-toe green can disappear.

09

Go hands-free

A crossbody or small structured bag leaves your hands free for a glass of wine and a plate of hors d'oeuvres.

10

Check the wedding website

Look for dress code, terrain notes and the weather forecast. Couples often mention gravel, lawn or hills — believe them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to a vineyard wedding?

A breathable midi or maxi dress in a print or seasonal colour, block heels or wedges that work on grass and gravel, and a light jacket or wrap for the evening. Most vineyard weddings are cocktail or semi-formal unless the invitation says otherwise.

What shoes should I wear to a vineyard wedding?

Block heels, wedges or elegant flats. Stilettos sink into grass and slip on gravel paths, and vineyard venues often involve walking between the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception.

What colours are best for a fall vineyard wedding?

Burgundy, plum, olive, terracotta, royal blue and deep red. These harvest tones look beautiful against autumn vines. Avoid white, ivory and champagne, which read bridal.

Can you wear black to a vineyard wedding?

Black is acceptable at evening and formal weddings, but at a daytime vineyard wedding it can feel heavy. A print or jewel tone usually looks better in golden light and in photos.

Should I wear a long or short dress to a vineyard wedding?

A midi is the safest choice on grass. A maxi works for formal or evening vineyard weddings if you can lift it easily or it sits just above the ankle. Minis suit welcome tastings and brunches better than the ceremony.

Do I need a jacket for a vineyard wedding?

Usually, yes. Vineyards cool quickly after sunset, especially in spring and fall. A cropped jacket, kimono or wrap keeps you warm without hiding your dress.
