A dinner date is the one occasion where almost nobody sees your whole outfit. You walk in, you sit down, and for two hours one person looks at you from three feet away, from the waist up. That inverts everything. The neckline is the entire garment, because it is what is above the table. Texture beats silhouette — at three feet you can see whether something is woven or printed, embroidered or applied, which you cannot at a wedding. Restaurant light is low and warm, so it deepens saturated colour and drains pale shades. And you have to eat: comfortable seated for two hours beats impressive standing for ten seconds.
Almost every date-night guide styles the full look — dress, shoes, bag, the walk into the room. Which is strange, because at a dinner date the full look is visible for roughly ninety seconds and then you sit down.
I am a Project Runway designer, and what interests me about this particular occasion is that it is the only one where somebody is close enough to see how a garment is actually made. That is worth designing for.

Writing about dressing for a hard-won restaurant reservation, goop makes the point that dressing up is "a sign of appreciation" as much as a matter of style — and recommends investing in pieces with genuine rewear potential rather than something bought for one evening.
Which is the same argument for handwork: a garment good enough to be seen at close range is also good enough to wear again.

Woman & Home notes that for an indoor venue like a restaurant or bar, what you wear underneath a coat matters as much as the coat — and recommends a block heel over a stiletto for any date involving walking.
Exactly right, and it is the same observation from the other direction: the outerwear comes off, and then you are the dress.
Where I would go further than either: once the coat is off and you are seated, the visible garment is roughly everything above the tablecloth — which is a much narrower brief than "an outfit", and a much easier one to get right.

Not Every Date Is a Dinner
Coffee or a gallery
You are standing and walking, so the whole silhouette is visible and comfort matters more than detail. This is the one where the full look counts — and the one where you should be able to leave in flats.
Dinner
Everything above. Neckline, texture, saturated colour, seated comfort. The one occasion where an embroidered or woven piece genuinely earns its price, because it will be looked at properly.
Rooftop or outdoor
Back to daylight rules, then a temperature drop after sunset. Saturated colour for the light, and a real layer for the hour when the terrace turns cold and nobody wants to leave yet. Our kimonos tie round the waist rather than needing to be carried.

What should I wear on a dinner date?
Something whose interest is above the waist, in a saturated colour, that you can sit in for two hours. You will be seen from three feet away from the waist up for most of the evening, so the neckline and the texture do all the work — the hem and the shoes barely feature.
What colour is best for a date night?
A saturated one. Restaurants are lit low and warm, which deepens wine, emerald, cobalt and deep rose while draining pale shades to a flat tone. Black works too, but a colour photographs warmer if the evening ends up on a camera.
Does the fabric really matter that much?
More here than anywhere else. A dinner date is the only occasion where somebody is close enough to see whether a pattern is woven or printed, and whether decoration is stitched into the cloth or stuck onto it. At a wedding nobody can tell. Across a table, everybody can.
What should I wear to a first date?
Something you can walk in and would be happy to still be wearing three hours later if it goes well. A shirt dress or a midi with flats covers coffee, and belting it with a low heel moves it up a register if the plan changes. Should I wear sleeves to dinner?
It is usually the practical choice. Restaurants run their air conditioning cold and you have no control over the table you are given. A sleeve you chose deliberately beats a wrap slipping off the back of a chair all evening — or a jacket, which sits entirely above the table anyway.
Is a wrap dress a good date night dress?
Very. A V-neck puts a diagonal at the neckline where it will be seen, there is no back zip to manage, and the tied waist can be loosened slightly after the main course without anyone noticing. That last point is not a joke — it is the difference between enjoying dinner and thinking about your dress.
