Cozy, cute and ready for seconds: the Thanksgiving dressing brief.

Quick Answer

The cutest Thanksgiving outfits are comfortable at the waist, printed rather than pale, and easy to layer: a wrap, shirt or kaftan dress in a warm fall colour, tights and boots or flats, and a jacket you can take off in a warm kitchen. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. For fall 2026, brown, burgundy and red are the colours to wear — and a rich print hides cranberry sauce far better than a white blouse.

Thanksgiving is the one holiday where your outfit has to do everything: look cute in the family photo, survive the kitchen, handle a three-course meal and still feel good on the couch at 9pm. It's not a fashion show — but it is one of the most photographed days of the year.

As a Project Runway designer making limited-edition dresses in sizes XS through 3XL, I design a lot of our pieces around exactly this kind of day: comfortable, forgiving and still special. This guide covers the Thanksgiving outfit formula, the fall 2026 trends worth bringing to the table, seven cute outfits for seven Thanksgiving plans, a little survival advice and twelve pieces from our newest collection.

Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. And if you remember the brown button-front skirt that went viral in 2016 and became known online as the 'Thanksgiving Outfit', Baptist News Global notes that women still revisit that look every November — just updated for comfort.

The Thanksgiving Outfit Formula

Rule 01

A waist that forgives

Wrap ties, kaftans and shirt dresses you can loosen beat a fitted waistband every time. You should be able to sit, lean and go back for pie.

Rule 02

Print over pale

Gravy and cranberry happen. FASHION magazine recommends rich printed pieces perfect for disguising red wine mishaps — and the editors at The Zoe Report learned the hard way that cranberry sauce and a crisp white blouse don't mix.

Rule 03

Layers you can shed

Hot kitchen, cold walk, chilly dining room. A jacket over a dress handles all three without a wardrobe change.

Rule 04

Shoes for hosting

Flats, loafers or low ankle boots if you're cooking or on your feet; save heels for a restaurant Thanksgiving.

🤎 Brown, Burgundy & Red

Reported by Who What Wear

Who What Wear says brown has moved beyond a seasonal neutral to become one of the defining colours of fall 2026, with burgundy and strategic red close behind — the warmest Thanksgiving palette imaginable.

📼 2016 Nostalgia

Reported by the Daily Bruin, citing British Vogue

2016-era style made a full comeback this year, which UCLA's Daily Bruin linked to British Vogue's take on a longing for a lighter moment. Perfect timing to update the original 2016 'Thanksgiving Outfit'.

🌼 Floaty '70s Shapes

Reported by FASHION magazine

FASHION magazine's feast-friendly picks lean on floaty '70s-inspired silhouettes — loose, flowing and made for sitting at the table in style.

🧵 Tapestry & Embroidery

Reported by Who What Wear & The Everygirl

Fall 2026 embraced embroidery, brocade and tapestry (Who What Wear), and The Everygirl named tapestry-inspired pattern a trend to anchor your fall wardrobe.

06

Thanksgiving at a restaurant

The royal blue Marquis maxi with a jacket, a block heel and gold earrings. No cooking, no cleanup — this is the year to dress up.

07

Thanksgiving Day Survival Tips

🥧 Do the Sit Test

Before you commit, sit down, lean forward and reach across the table. If it pulls or pinches now, it'll be worse after pie.

🍷 Plan for Spills

Wear a print, keep a stain pen in your bag, and blot rather than rub. For handwork, see our garment care guide.

👩🍳 Kitchen to Table

Sleeves you can push up while cooking, a jacket that comes off at the stove and goes back on at the table.

📸 Photo-Ready

Colour near your face is what shows in the family photo. Our 30-second colour test tells you which shade to wear.

Plus-Size Thanksgiving Outfits

The Thanksgiving formula — a forgiving waist, a rich print and an easy layer — is made for curvy bodies. Wrap dresses like Queen adjust through the meal, kaftans like Duchess drape beautifully, and an open jacket creates a long, elegant line. Our dresses are graded to 3XL; read our guide to chic plus-size style, or shop plus-size dresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Thanksgiving 2026?

Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday, November 26, 2026. In the US, Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday of November.

What should I wear to Thanksgiving dinner?

A comfortable dress with a forgiving waist, such as a wrap, shirt or kaftan dress, in a warm fall colour or rich print, with tights and boots or flats and a jacket you can take off. It should look cute in photos and feel comfortable after a big meal.

What is a comfortable but cute Thanksgiving outfit?

A wrap midi or kaftan dress with opaque tights, ankle boots and a statement jacket. Adjustable waists, soft drape and layers keep you comfortable from the kitchen to the couch.

What colours should I wear for Thanksgiving?

Warm fall colours: brown, burgundy, red, rust, olive and gold. Brown is one of the defining colours of fall 2026. A rich print is also practical, since it hides small spills.

What should I wear to Friendsgiving?

Something a little cooler than family dinner: a printed shirt dress or mini with sheer tights, knee boots and a cropped jacket, or a dress over jeans. Friendsgiving is usually more casual, so comfort and personality win.

Can I wear a dress to Thanksgiving?

Yes. A dress is often more comfortable than jeans after a big meal. Choose sleeves or add a jacket, wear tights for warmth, and pick a style with an adjustable or relaxed waist.
