Quick Answer
The dress code on the invitation tells you the formality. The venue tells you almost everything else — and it is the part most guests never think about. A church asks for covered shoulders. A beach makes a floor-length hem and any heel unwearable. A garden means grass, which sinks a stiletto. A barn means uneven ground and a cold evening. A ballroom is the one place a full-length gown genuinely belongs. Two colour rules apply everywhere: nothing near white, ivory or champagne, and avoid the bridal party's colour. Beyond that, wear colour — it photographs better than every neutral.
Most wedding guest advice stops at the dress code, which is the easy half. "Cocktail attire" tells you the register but nothing about whether you will spend three hours on grass, sand or a stone terrace — and that is what actually decides the dress.

Five Venues, and What Each One Changes

If you only ask the couple one question, ask what the ground is. It settles the shoes and the hem, which settles most of the rest.

Colour: Two Real Rules, Then Freedom
The two that matter
Nothing near white — ivory, cream, champagne and very pale blush all photograph as white on fair skin, and photographs are where this gets noticed. And avoid the bridal party's colour, which you can usually work out from the invitation's palette. Matching the bridesmaids reads as an error, not a compliment.
And one that is no longer true
Black is fine. The old prohibition has genuinely gone, and a good black dress is a perfectly correct evening or ballroom choice. It reads slightly severe in bright daylight at a garden wedding, which is a styling consideration rather than an etiquette one — a colour or print simply photographs warmer outdoors.

What should I wear to a wedding as a guest?

What do you wear to a beach wedding as a guest?
A midi rather than a maxi, flat sandals or a wedge, a secure neckline for the wind, and a natural fibre for humidity. Soft sand collects a floor-length hem within twenty steps, and heels are unusable — most guests end up barefoot regardless, so plan for it rather than discovering it.
Is it rude to wear a print to a wedding?
Not at all — a print on a coloured ground is one of the safest choices there is, because it cannot be mistaken for bridal at any distance or in any photograph. It also holds up in bright outdoor light where a pale solid bleaches flat.
