What to Wear to a Baby Shower as a Guest

A baby shower guest outfit should be festive, comfortable, and one notch below the guest of honour. A midi or maxi dress in soft colour or print is the most reliable answer for almost any shower. Beyond that, the venue does the deciding: a brunch at someone's home asks for far less than an afternoon tea at a hotel. The two things to avoid are anything that reads as bridal-white and anything you can't comfortably sit in for three hours. Everything below is organised by the kind of shower you're actually going to.
Baby showers occupy an odd middle ground. They're clearly an occasion — there will be photographs, there will be a gift table, someone will have made a cake — but they almost never come with a dress code printed on the invitation. Which leaves most guests guessing.
As a Project Runway designer, this is one of the questions I'm asked most. Here's the honest framework, by shower type, plus ten pieces from our baby shower collection mapped to each.

What to Wear, by Shower Type
This is the part most guides skip, and it's the part that actually matters. A baby shower isn't one event — it's five quite different ones, and the right outfit shifts noticeably between them.
Brunch or at-home shower
The most common format and the most relaxed. A simple midi dress, or a wrap dress in a soft solid, with flats or a low block heel. You'll likely be sitting on a sofa and possibly on the floor for games — choose accordingly.
Garden or backyard shower
Print and colour genuinely shine outdoors. Choose a floral or bright midi and, most importantly, a block heel, wedge, or flat — a stiletto sinks into grass every single time. Bring a light layer for when the sun moves.
Afternoon tea or hotel shower
The dressiest version. A maxi dress or an elegant midi with a heel and a proper handbag. This is the one shower where looking slightly more formal than the room is safer than looking too casual.
Evening or co-ed shower
Co-ed showers ("baby-ques", couples showers) run later and lean cocktail-adjacent. A one-shoulder or structured midi works; so does a jumpsuit. Richer colour reads better in evening light than pastel does.
Destination or resort shower
Increasingly common, and the most forgiving. Breathable fabric, a print that travels without creasing, and something that works for both the shower itself and dinner afterwards. A jacket dress or a wrap earns its suitcase space.
What Not to Wear to a Baby Shower
There's no long list of rules here, but there are four things worth thinking about before you commit to an outfit.
- Head-to-toe white or ivory — increasingly, mums-to-be wear white to their own shower, and it photographs as though you didn't check. White as part of a multicolour print is completely fine.
- Anything you can't sit in for three hours — showers are seated events with cake, games, and a long gift-opening stretch. A dress that rides up when you sit will make the whole afternoon uncomfortable.
- Very short or very tight — not out of prudishness, but because it's the guest of honour's day and a genuinely eye-catching outfit shifts attention. Save it for a different event.
- Anything that competes with a stated theme — if the invitation names colours, a nod is thoughtful; matching the décor exactly is a bit much.

If the mum-to-be has told you what she's wearing, that's useful information rather than a constraint. You're not trying to avoid her colour — you're just avoiding turning up in an identical dress, which happens more than you'd think when everyone shops the same three websites.
Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter
Spring & summer
Cotton, linen, and light print. Sleeveless or short sleeves with something to throw on if the shower moves indoors into air conditioning. Sunscreen if any part of it is outdoors — showers run long.
Fall & winter
Long sleeves, richer colour, and a jacket that looks intentional rather than like outerwear you didn't take off. Velvet, jacquard, and deeper prints suit the season far better than pastel does.
The layer that always works
A printed or embroidered jacket over a simple dress solves temperature, formality, and photographs all at once — and it's the single most re-wearable thing you can buy for occasion dressing.
