Packing by destination is the usual advice. Packing by climate is the useful one, because the same fabric behaves completely differently in dry heat and in humidity. Linen is superb in dry heat and disappointing in the tropics — it absorbs moisture, so it goes limp and creases set hard. Cotton poplin is the opposite: it holds its shape in humidity and dries fast. Viscose drapes beautifully and falls out of a suitcase overnight, but clings when damp, so it is an evening fabric. Get the fibre right for the climate and the rest of the suitcase follows.
A vacation wardrobe should be a short, considered collection rather than an overstuffed suitcase — and the pieces that earn their place are the ones that cross from a morning walk to an evening table without a change.
But there is one thing almost every packing guide gets wrong, and it costs people whole outfits: they recommend fabric by season rather than by humidity. I am a Project Runway designer and I choose cloth for a living, so let me start there.

What is the best fabric for a hot holiday?
It depends on humidity, not temperature. In dry heat — Greece, Morocco, the Southwest — linen is unbeatable. In humidity, cotton poplin is the better choice: linen absorbs moisture, goes limp by mid-morning and creases hard, while poplin holds its shape and dries fast.
How many dresses should I pack for a week?
Around six garments in a shared palette rather than seven separate outfits. Two pieces that cross from day to evening — a kaftan with a waist tie, a shirt dress with a belt — do more work than four that only cover one register each.

Only for cool climates and evenings — wine country, mountains, a cruise formal night. But in those settings it is the most photogenic fabric there is, because the pile holds colour under a camera flash where satin and sequin blow out to white.
