The graduate's secret weapon: a collar that peeks out of the gown, and a dress that steals the show when it comes off.

Quick Answer

Under a graduation gown, wear a lightweight dress that ends above the gown's hem — a mini or knee-length shirt dress, wrap dress or A-line — with a collar, scoop or square neckline that sits neatly under the gown, and block heels or polished flats you can walk across a stage in. Then make sure the dress works on its own: the gown comes off for photos, dinner and the party.

Graduation is the one day your outfit spends half its time hidden. For the ceremony it's under a polyester gown, with only a collar, a hem and your shoes showing. Then the gown comes off for photos, lunch with family and the party — and suddenly the dress is the whole story.

As a Project Runway designer, I love designing for days like this: dresses that work under a gown and shine without one, in sizes XS through 3XL. This guide is for the graduate: the under-the-gown rules, ten dress ideas from ceremony to party, and twelve pieces from our newest collection, Let Them Eat Cake.

Dressing to watch someone graduate instead? Our companion guide, What to Wear to a Graduation: The Mother-of-the-Graduate Guide, covers mothers, family and guests. Whether you're crossing the stage at a December commencement or planning ahead for spring 2027, start here.

What to Wear Under a Graduation Gown: 4 Rules

Rule 01

Hem shorter than the gown

Your dress should end above the gown's hem so nothing peeks out unevenly. Minis and knee-length dresses are easiest; check midis against your gown before the day.

Rule 02

A neckline that sits neatly

A collar peeks out polished at the V of the gown; scoop, square and strapless necklines disappear underneath. Avoid big ruffles or bows at the neck.

Rule 03

Light, flat fabric

Gowns are hot and ceremonies are long. Choose breathable cotton, viscose or poplin, and skip full skirts and layers that bunch.

Rule 04

Shoes for the stage

Your shoes are fully visible and you'll walk stairs. Block heels, wedges or polished flats beat stilettos. Check any school rules on colour.

What the Fashion Press Says About Graduation Dresses

👔 The Collared Dress

Reported by Fashion Gone Rogue

Fashion Gone Rogue suggests a collared dress for a modern, neat look under the gown — and notes that a scoop neck also works because it doesn't interfere with the gown's design.

✨ One Statement Piece

Reported by Fashion Gone Rogue

If you want something flashy, wear one statement piece and keep the rest minimal (Fashion Gone Rogue). Ankle-strap heels or embellished flats can add polish without overpowering.

📐 A-Line & Sheath Shapes

Reported by David's Bridal

Occasion-wear specialist David’s Bridal recommends A-line silhouettes for a clean line under the gown, and avoiding anything structured or bulky that creates strange shapes.

📏 Shorter Than the Gown

Reported by David's Bridal

Their 2026 outfit guide puts it simply: your dress should be shorter than your graduation gown, with comfortable shoes like wedges or block heels.

10 Stylish Graduation Dress Ideas

01

The collared shirt dress

The Versailles mini shirt dress: its collar sits perfectly at the gown's V, and it's short enough to disappear underneath.

02

The embroidered mini

The Marie mini in blush pink with hand embroidery — invisible under the gown, unforgettable in the photos after.

03

The wrap midi

The Queen wrap midi lies flat under a gown and flatters every body. Check the hem against your gown length first.

04

The halter for the party

The Louis halter midi is made for the celebration afterwards: a full A-line skirt that swings in every photo.

05

The bell-sleeve dinner dress

The Sophie midi: save its statement sleeves for the family dinner, when the gown is off.

06

The one-shoulder showstopper

The Carolina maxi for the grad party or a formal celebration — the balloon sleeve is pure main-character energy.

07

The graduation gala or formal

The royal blue Marquis maxi with hand embroidery for a senior formal, honours dinner or grad gala.

08

The garden-party celebration

The Antonia maxi with handmade tassel straps for an outdoor party in the backyard or on campus.

09

The winter commencement

For December ceremonies, add a layer for the walk to the car: the Fleur tapestry jacket or cropped Dauphine over your dress, with tights.

10

The relaxed backyard party

The Duchess kaftan for a laid-back barbecue celebration, or the pastel kimono over a simple dress.

Ceremony, Dinner, Party: One Dress or Three?

🎓 One Dress, All Day

Choose a mini or knee-length dress that works under the gown and on its own — Versailles or Marie — and change only your shoes and earrings for the evening.

👗 Two Dresses

A neat, gown-friendly dress for the ceremony, then a statement midi or maxi for dinner and the party. The most popular choice for photos.

❄️ Winter Graduates

December commencements call for tights, a jacket for outdoor photos, and long sleeves for the reception. Layer, don't bulk.

Wrap dresses, shirt dresses and A-lines lie smoothly under a gown at every size, and look polished the moment it comes off. Our dresses are graded to 3XL so the print scale and neckline are right in every size. Read our guide to chic plus-size style, or shop plus-size dresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear under my graduation gown?

A lightweight dress that ends above the gown's hem, such as a mini or knee-length shirt dress, wrap dress or A-line dress, with a collar, scoop or square neckline that sits neatly under the gown. Pair it with block heels, wedges or polished flats.

Can I wear a maxi dress under a graduation gown?

Usually it's better not to, because a maxi can peek out below the gown or bunch underneath. Save the maxi for the dinner or party, or choose a midi you've checked against your gown length.

Do you have to wear white to graduation?

Some schools and traditions ask graduates to wear white, but many don't. Check your school's guidance; if there's no rule, wear the colour you love most in photos.

What shoes should I wear to graduation?

Block heels, wedges or polished flats. Your shoes are fully visible under the gown and you'll walk stairs and across a stage, so choose something comfortable and secure.

What should I wear to my graduation party?

Something that feels celebratory: a statement midi or maxi in a bold print or colour, like a halter or one-shoulder dress, with comfortable shoes for a long day.

What should I wear to a winter graduation?

A long-sleeve or midi dress with tights under the gown, plus a jacket or coat for outdoor photos. Avoid bulky knits that bunch under the gown.
