A honeymoon is the hardest trip to pack for, and not because it is romantic. It is the only holiday that is genuinely half beach and half occasion — pool mornings and the best dinner reservations you will make all year, often in the same twenty-four hours. Most people solve it by packing two separate wardrobes and using neither properly. The better answer is six pieces that cross over: two kaftans or cover-up dresses, one day dress, one properly good evening piece, one layer, and one pair of wide-leg trousers. Choose them in a shared palette and you will get through fourteen days without repeating an outfit anyone notices.
Most honeymoon shopping guides are written as though the trip were a photoshoot. Buy the white dresses, buy the matching set, buy the thing that only makes sense in one photograph on one afternoon. It is an expensive way to pack badly.
There is also a practical argument for restraint that nobody makes out loud. According to The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study, drawn from 10,474 US couples married in 2025, the average wedding now costs around $34,000. The honeymoon wardrobe is therefore being bought at the least comfortable financial moment most couples will have — which is a very good reason to buy fewer things you will actually wear again, rather than a themed capsule that goes into storage in September.
I am a Project Runway designer whose collection is largely resort and occasion wear, which means the honeymoon problem — beach and dinner in the same suitcase — is essentially what I design for. Here is how I would pack it.
Why This Trip Is Harder to Pack Than a Normal Holiday
On an ordinary beach holiday you dress for one register and occasionally go somewhere nicer. On a honeymoon the ratio inverts. You have almost certainly booked the best restaurants available, you are being photographed more than usual, and there may well be a dressier element built in — a resort's celebration dinner, a private boat, a night that was planned months ago. Meanwhile the days are still hot, still wet, still sandy. Two registers, running at full strength, in one carry-on.

Three Things Worth Deciding Before You Shop
Whether you actually want white
Plenty of people do — the bridal feeling is real and it is nice to extend it. But white is also the least practical colour in sand, sunscreen and sea, and it bleaches to a flat shape in strong light. If you want it, keep it to one piece and let the rest carry colour.
How much of the trip is actually beach
Be honest about the itinerary. A resort fortnight and a two-city Italian trip need almost opposite suitcases, and couples routinely pack for the first while booking the second. Count the evenings you will actually be dressing for.
What survives the photographs
You will look at these pictures for decades. Saturated colour and print hold their detail in hard coastal light where pale neutrals blow out entirely. This is the one holiday where dressing for the camera is a reasonable thing to do.

How many outfits do I need for a two-week honeymoon?

Should I wear white on my honeymoon?
If you want to, absolutely — extending the bridal feeling is a real pleasure and there is no reason to talk anyone out of it. Practically, keep it to one piece. White is the least forgiving colour in sand, sunscreen and sea water, and in strong coastal light it loses all its detail in photographs, reading as a flat white shape rather than a dress.
What should I wear to honeymoon dinners?
One genuinely good evening piece in a fabric that recovers from a suitcase — viscose linen satin, crepe, georgette or jersey. Resorts and better restaurants generally expect more than a sundress and less than a gown. A maxi or elegant midi with flat gold sandals is right almost everywhere.
What is the most useful single piece to pack?
A printed kaftan, without much competition. It is correct over a swimsuit at midday and as a dress at eight, needs no ironing, survives humidity, and takes a belt if you want more structure. One garment covering two registers is exactly what this trip requires.
What colours photograph best on a honeymoon?
Saturated colour and dense print. Hard sun and reflected water strip the detail out of pale neutrals and pastels, which is why beige-heavy holiday photographs look flat. Coral, cobalt, emerald and strong prints hold their depth in exactly the conditions that destroy pale shades — and you will be looking at these pictures for decades.
How do I pack for a honeymoon that is half city and half beach?
Weight the six pieces toward whichever half is longer, and make the day dress a midi with sleeves so it works for churches, museums and older restaurants as well as walking.
