Matching Sets & Co-ords for Women

A matching set is the only outfit that is already finished before you put it on. Buy both halves and you have a co-ord; wear them apart and you have four or five outfits instead of one. That arithmetic is the whole argument, and it is why a set beats a dress on value.

Who What Wear's editors put it less diplomatically — matching sets are "cooler than dresses". Hard to argue. Fourteen pieces here, $78 to $198.

The two sets I designed as pairs

Saffron — $306 together. Santra Baby Doll Top ($148) and Jaipur Joggers ($158), both hand-dyed cotton denim. Square neck and flutter cap sleeves on the top; tasselled drawstring, button detail and slip pockets on the joggers.

Turquoise — $306 together. Shah Top ($148) and Jal Joggers ($158) in classic turquoise blue cotton denim. Elasticated waist, tapered ankle, relaxed through the body.

The Miniature Top ($188) in organic cotton sateen was also cut to go with the Jaipur Joggers, so the saffron bottoms work twice.

Tops and trousers that coordinate

The rest are separates designed to be combined rather than sold as fixed pairs — which is the more useful way to buy them.

Palazzo trousers — Blue Ombre Wide-Leg ($198) and Deco Red Wide-Leg ($168), both 100% cotton poplin with a matching belt and tassel detail. Audrey Printed Velvet Pants ($138) in a blue Art Nouveau floral with a cropped hem.

Colour-block tops in 100% certified organic cotton sateen with statement ruffled sleeves — Zaza Blue and Rose Red ($88 each). Both were designed to go with trousers in their own colour family.

Ombre halter tops — Sunset Pink Ombre ($98) and Sunrise Pink Blue Ombre ($78), both 100% cotton with ruffle detail. The two cheapest pieces here and the easiest with white jeans.

Longer tops — Iris Electric Blue Plisse Tunic ($158) with a velvet floral neckline, long enough for leggings, and the Dahlia Blue Top ($167) in lurex georgette with floral applique and multicoloured buttons — the dressiest thing here.

Why a set is better value than a dress

A set at $306 costs roughly what one of my dresses does. The difference is what you get out of it:

• Worn together — a finished outfit that reads deliberate, which is what a dress gives you.
• Top with jeans — the Santra and Shah are cotton denim, so they work with blue denim the way a shirt does.
• Trousers with a plain tee — the palazzos were literally designed for a black or white T-shirt.
• Top with a skirt, trousers with a jacket — two more.

Four or five outfits from two pieces, against one from a dress. It is also why separates win in a suitcase: more combinations per inch of space than any dress can offer.

How to wear a co-ord without it looking like pyjamas

This is the real risk with a top-and-trouser set, and it comes down to three things.

Structure at one end. A relaxed top needs a shoe with some shape — a heeled sandal, a loafer, a clean sneaker. Not a slide.

Keep accessories quiet. The set is the outfit. One earring, one bag, done. Who What Wear say the same in their autumn co-ord edit — let the set carry the look and add a jacket rather than jewellery.

Define the waist if the top is loose. The joggers have a drawstring and the palazzos come with a belt. Use them rather than leaving them slack.

Travelling with a set

If you are packing for a warm-weather trip, a co-ord is the most efficient thing you can put in a bag. It is a plane outfit, a daytime outfit, and — split up — two more. The joggers are the only trousers you need for the flight.

Sizing and fabric

These run XS (US 00–0) to XXL (US 18–20), with the Dahlia cut to 3XL. Stock is strongest in XS through L — XL and XXL have sold through on several pieces, so check the size selector before planning an outfit around one, and confirm the price shown there before checkout.

Two fit notes worth knowing: the Blue Ombre Palazzo runs one size small, so order up, and the Audrey velvet pants do too. Everything else is cut true. Buy the top and the bottom in your usual size.

Matching set questions

What is a co-ord set?

Two garments cut from the same fabric or print, designed to be worn together as one outfit. Short for "co-ordinates". The point is that the matching is done for you — and that each half still works separately.

Are matching sets still in style?

Yes. Fashion press runs co-ord edits every season, and the current argument from Who What Wear's editors is that a matching set reads cooler than a dress because it looks considered rather than default. The shapes change; the format does not.

How do you wear a matching set without looking like you are in pyjamas?

Give one end structure. A relaxed top and trouser set needs a shoe with shape — a heeled sandal, a loafer, a clean sneaker — and a defined waist. Use the drawstring or belt rather than leaving it loose, and keep accessories to one piece.

Can you wear the top and bottom separately?

That is the whole point, and it is why these are sold as separates rather than fixed sets. A cotton denim top works with blue jeans the way a shirt does; a printed palazzo works with a plain white tee. Two pieces bought together give you four or five outfits instead of one.

Do I buy the same size in both halves?

Can you wear a summer co-ord in autumn?

Cotton denim and poplin, yes — add a trench, a gilet or a denim jacket over the top and they carry straight through. The lighter georgette and plisse pieces are warm-weather only unless you layer underneath.
