Colour Block Dresses for Women — Bold Colour, Clean Lines
Colour blocking is the easiest way to wear a lot of colour without wearing a print. Two or three clean panels, no pattern to read, nothing busy — just colour doing the work. It is the right answer for anyone who loves colour but finds a full print too much, and it photographs better than almost anything because the shapes stay legible from across a room.
The one everyone buys
The Noor Pink and Yellow Colour Block Midi at $278 is my most-visited dress of the year. Pink against yellow with a scalloped edge where the two meet — the scallop is what stops it looking like a graphic exercise and makes it a dress. It has a pocket and a side slit, and it works at a baby shower, a garden wedding and a lunch without changing anything but the shoes.
Why saturated colour, and why now
Who What Wear reports saturated colour and candy-colour combinations replacing the muted, neutral palette that dominated the last few years. That is the shift colour blocking depends on — it only works when the colours are confident. A beige-and-cream colour block is just beige.
Maxi
Big panels of colour need length to read properly. The Palm Tree Dress at $358 blocks sky blue, yellow and green. The Sahara Maxi is $338, the Palais Pink Maxi $258, and the Gustav Maxi at $258 blocks colour against stripe.
Midi and mini
The Marrakech Mini at $298 and the Mosaic Swing Dress at $258, which has an evil eye and a love bug hidden in it if you look closely. The Rene Red Midi is $178, the Rosê Peach Midi $128, and the Sofia Pleated Dress $118.
At the lighter end: the Sher Long Sleeve Dress and the Shaam Grey Dress at $118, and the Tara Blue Dress at $78.
How to wear colour block without overthinking it
Let the dress be the whole outfit. Solid shoes, solid bag, one piece of jewellery — anything patterned next to a colour block turns it into noise. Gold suits warm blocks, silver suits cool ones. A plain jacket layers over all of it; a patterned one will fight.
If you are nervous, start with a block that includes a colour you already wear. The Noor is pink and yellow, and most people own shoes that work with one of those. And unlike a print, a colour block tells you exactly what to match to, because the colours are right there with nothing to interpret.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a colour block dress?
A dress built from two or more solid panels of contrasting colour, with no print. The colours meet in a defined seam or edge rather than blending. It gives you the impact of a print with none of the busyness, which is why it suits people who want colour but find pattern too much.
Is colour blocking still in fashion?
Yes, and it is helped by the wider move back toward saturated colour — Who What Wear reports candy-colour combinations replacing the muted neutrals of recent years. Colour blocking only works when the colours are confident, so a bolder palette is exactly the conditions it needs.
Which colours work together in a colour block?
Pairs that sit opposite each other, like pink and yellow or blue and orange, give the strongest contrast. Neighbouring colours such as coral and red are softer and easier to wear. The one combination to avoid is two shades that are close but not matching — that reads as a mistake rather than a choice.
What shoes go with a colour block dress?
Solid, in a colour that picks up one of the blocks, or a neutral — nude, tan, gold or black. Nothing patterned. The dress is already doing the work, and a printed shoe turns a clean idea into clutter.
Can you wear colour block over 40 or 50?
Absolutely, and it is often easier than print. Clean panels of colour read as deliberate and modern, and you can control exactly how much colour sits near your face by choosing which block falls at the neckline. Love your body as it is and dress for the room you are walking into.
