Broadway Show Outfits — Theatre Dresses for Women

There is no official Broadway dress code — and that is exactly what makes it hard. Broadway Direct, the Nederlander Organization's own guide, confirms no theatre enforces one. In practice an unwritten one exists: smart casual at a matinee, closer to cocktail in the evening, and genuinely dressed for an opening night. These are the dresses I would wear to each.

What to wear, by performance

Matinee. Daytime, often after lunch and before dinner, so this is the relaxed end. A printed midi does it without trying — the Pink and Purple Printed Wrap Midi at $258 has long sleeves for a cold auditorium, or the Begum Burgundy Midi Shirt Dress at $288.

Evening performance. The most common question I get, and the answer is cocktail-adjacent rather than black tie. This is not just my taste. Who What Wear called opulent, ornate dressing the defining evening trend for Fall 2026 — brocade, embroidery, rich colour, tapestry, fringe and velvet, with plain silhouettes taking a back seat. It is a description of what I have been making for ten years.

Four things the guides do not tell you

You will sit for about three hours. Test the dress seated before you commit. Anything stiff through the waist or very short becomes a management problem by the second act.

Broadway houses run cold. Air conditioning is aggressive year round. Sleeves or a jacket beat a wrap you will end up holding.

Bags are checked at many theatres. Carry small. A large tote may not be allowed in.

You will walk more of Midtown than you expect. Between dinner, the theatre and a cab that never materialises. Wear a block heel you can actually walk in, and save the stiletto for a car-door-to-lobby night.
