Wedding Guest Dresses with Sleeves
A sleeve has to survive the whole day. Seated through a ceremony, and still comfortable at eleven at night. That rules out more than people expect — anything tight through the upper arm stops being comfortable by the speeches, and a cuff cut too narrow catches every time you reach for a glass. These are the dresses in my collection with sleeves cut wide enough to forget about.
Four sleeve shapes, and they behave differently
A bell or flared sleeve moves. The Sophie Green Midi at $255 and the Mehtab Ombre Dress at $298 both widen from the elbow, which photographs beautifully and keeps air moving on a warm day. A balloon sleeve gathers at the cuff instead: the Carolina One-Shoulder Maxi at $265 sets one draped balloon sleeve against a bare shoulder, and the Opal Black Wrap at $378 has them on both sides. A set-in long sleeve is the quietest and the most venue-proof — the Pink and Purple Printed Wrap Midi at $258 ends in a clean cuff. A kaftan sleeve is the coolest thing you can wear in real heat, which is the Duchess Red Kaftan and the Taj Kaftan, both $298.
If the venue has a coverage rule
Many churches, temples and gurdwaras do. These are the pieces that cover the shoulder and upper arm without a shawl you have to keep rearranging: the Printed Wrap Midi at $258, the Begum Burgundy Midi Shirt Dress at $288, the Zoe Jacket Dress at $358, the Margarita Blue Velvet Jacket Dress at $298 and the Gaudi Teal Wrap Velvet Dress at $398.
Prices
The range here runs $118 to $398. At the lighter end: the Sher Long Sleeve Dress at $118, the Poppy Wrap Dress at $199 with short sleeves, the Blossom Floral Cotton Dress at $207 with flared sleeves, and the Espana Kaftan at $228. The velvets sit at the top because velvet is slower and less forgiving to print than cotton. Every print is drawn in-house by Sandhya Garg, Project Runway Season 13, and made in limited runs that are not repeated.
Sizing
These run XS to 3XL depending on style. Wrap shapes tie to your own waist, so the Printed Wrap Midi, the Opal, the Poppy and the Gaudi all work if you fall between two sizes — go by your bust. Kaftans have no fixed waist at all. Any style can be made to your measurements for $50 to $100 above retail, which is the route to take if you want a sleeve lengthened or a cuff widened. Check the size chart before ordering.
Practical notes
Sit down in the dress and reach forward before you commit. That is the movement that tells you whether a sleeve is cut right, and it is the one nobody tests in a fitting room. A flared or bell sleeve needs clearance at a plated dinner, so for a long seated meal a set-in sleeve or a kaftan sleeve is easier to manage. And a printed sleeve forgives a spilled drink in a way a pale solid never will.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are sleeves appropriate for a wedding guest dress?
Yes, and for a lot of weddings they are the better choice. Sleeves make a dress work in a church, temple or gurdwara with a coverage rule, they keep you comfortable at an evening ceremony that gets cold after sunset, and they remove the need for a shawl you end up carrying all night. A bell or balloon sleeve reads as dressy rather than conservative.
What sleeve length works best for a wedding?
It depends on the venue and the hour. A full long sleeve is the safest for a religious ceremony or a winter wedding. A three-quarter or bell sleeve is easier at a seated dinner because it clears the table. A short or flutter sleeve suits a summer or garden wedding where full coverage would be too warm. If you are buying one dress to cover several weddings, a long sleeve in a light fabric does the most jobs.
What should I wear to a wedding if I want my arms covered?
Look at a set-in long sleeve or a kaftan sleeve rather than a shawl or a bolero, both of which slip and need managing all day. A wrap dress with long sleeves gives coverage and adjusts to your own waist. A jacket dress is the other good answer, because the structure means it holds its shape through a long day.
Do these come in plus sizes?
Sizes run XS to 3XL depending on the style, and the full plus size wedding guest range is here. Wrap shapes and kaftans are the most adaptable because there is no fixed waist measurement. Any dress can also be made to your measurements for $50 to $100 above retail, including adjustments to sleeve length and cuff width.
Can I wear a printed dress to a wedding?
Yes, as long as you avoid white and ivory and stay off the bridesmaid colour. A print is often the smarter choice than a solid: it photographs with more depth, it is far less likely to match another guest, and it hides a spill. Ask the couple what the bridesmaids are wearing and work around that one colour.
