Red is the colour people reach for when they want to be seen, and then lose their nerve about. The usual worry is that it is too much. In practice the opposite is true — a red dress reads as confident rather than loud, it photographs better than almost anything against both daylight and candlelight, and it is the one colour nobody forgets you wore.
What is here
The Duchess Red Kaftan at $298 is the loudest of them — a floor-length kaftan in my Let Them Eat Cake print, lipstick red and antique gold, with the words hidden in the pattern. The Begum Burgundy Midi Shirt Dress at $288 is the opposite: sleeves, a bow detail and a shape you can wear to a wedding and then to a work lunch. The Jharokha Rust Orange Cotton Maxi is $298, and the Rene Red Midi $178.
Where to wear red
Festive evenings above all — Diwali, Christmas parties, New Year, milestone birthdays. Red is also the right answer for a date night and for any event where the photographs matter, because it holds its colour under warm indoor light where navy and black go muddy. The one place to think twice is a wedding: red is fine at most, but it pulls focus, so check with the couple first, and avoid it entirely at a traditional Indian wedding where red belongs to the bride.
Sizing and care
Sizes run XS to 3XL depending on the style, and every piece can be made to your measurements. Check the size chart before ordering. Reds and deep burgundies are the dyes most likely to bleed on a first wash, so wash each piece on its own the first time, in cold water, and hang dry out of direct sun — sunlight fades red faster than any other colour.
