What to Wear on a Luxury Cruise:
The Complete 2025–2026 Guide

Dress Codes · Formal Nights · Cruise Line Breakdown · Packing List · By Sandhya Garg, Project Runway Designer

Quick Answer

Cruise wear has three tiers: daytime casual (swimwear, shorts, sundresses — pool deck only), evening smart casual (the standard most nights — sundresses, printed maxis, blouses with trousers), and formal or gala nights (1–3 per cruise depending on the line — cocktail dresses, dressy jumpsuits, floor-length gowns). The key principle: swimwear and flip-flops are prohibited in any indoor restaurant at any time on virtually every cruise line. Beyond that, most cruise lines in 2025–2026 are considerably more relaxed than their brochures suggest.

Perhaps it is your first luxury cruise. Or maybe it has been a while since you boarded a ship and you are wondering whether your wardrobe is up to the occasion. Packing for a cruise is genuinely different from packing for any other vacation — because a cruise is not one occasion, it is many. The same day might take you from a sun lounger on the pool deck to a port excursion through a historic city to the main dining room at formal night. Your wardrobe needs to cover all of it, elegantly, from a single suitcase.

As a Project Runway designer whose label was built around lightweight, wrinkle-resistant pieces designed for exactly this challenge — clothing that works across occasions, packs flat, and looks extraordinary — I have strong opinions on this. This guide covers what every cruise dress code actually means, how it varies by cruise line, and exactly what to pack for a 7-night cruise.

The 3 Cruise Dress Code Tiers Explained

Almost every cruise line uses some variation of these three tiers — the terminology varies, but the expectations are consistent:

Tier Also Called When Women: Wear Never
Casual Relaxed, Daytime Pool deck, buffet, daytime activities Swimwear + cover-up, shorts, sundress, sandals Swimwear indoors without cover-up
Smart Casual Resort Casual, Evening Chic (Celebrity), Country Club Most dining evenings, lounges after 6pm Printed midi/maxi, wrap dress, blouse + trousers, jumpsuit Shorts, flip-flops, swimwear, tank tops, torn denim
Formal / Gala Dress Your Best (Royal Caribbean), Gala Evening (Cunard), Evening Chic (Celebrity) 1–3 designated evenings per cruise Cocktail dress, floor-length gown, dressy jumpsuit Jeans (on Cunard), shorts, casual footwear

Cruise Dress Codes by Cruise Line (2025–2026)

The same dress code term means different things at different cruise lines. Here is the breakdown for the major luxury and premium lines — verified against 2025–2026 policies:

Cunard (QM2, Queen Anne)

MOST FORMAL

The last great bastion of traditional cruise formality. Cunard has Gala Evenings requiring smart dinner jackets for men and encouraging floor-length gowns, cocktail dresses, or smart trouser suits for women. Jeans are not permitted in the Britannia Restaurant at any time — this is strictly enforced. After 6pm, even on non-gala evenings, 'smart attire' is required throughout the ship.

For women: Pack one or two floor-length gowns or full cocktail dresses for Gala nights. Smart dresses or skirts with blouses for all other evenings. No jeans at any indoor restaurant at any time. Cunard will redirect you if you do not meet the dress code.

Celebrity Cruises

SMART CHIC

Celebrity calls their dress code 'Evening Chic' and takes it seriously. No formal nights — instead 1–2 'Celebrity Chic' evenings where cocktail attire is expected. On all other evenings, smart casual is the standard. Shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, T-shirts, robes, and swimwear are explicitly prohibited in all restaurants at any time. Athletic wear will get you redirected.

For women: Printed midi or maxi dress for smart casual evenings. Cocktail dress or elegant jumpsuit for Evening Chic nights. Clean jeans are permitted on casual evenings. This is Sandhya Garg's ideal cruise audience — artisanal prints, quality fabrics, occasion-flexible pieces.

Royal Caribbean

RELAXED FORMAL

Royal Caribbean has three tiers: casual (daytime), smart casual (most evenings), and formal/'Dress Your Best' (1–2 nights per cruise). On formal nights, cocktail dresses or evening gowns are suggested for women — but enforcement is gentle compared to Cunard. Tasteful jeans without tears are acceptable on smart casual nights. Swimwear, tank tops, and flip-flops are not allowed in the main dining room in the evening.

For women: A sundress or printed midi for casual evenings, a wrap dress or blouse with trousers for smart casual, and one cocktail dress for Dress Your Best nights covers everything. One good pair of heeled sandals for evenings; flat sandals for daytime.

Viking Ocean Cruises

RESORT CASUAL ALWAYS

Viking has no formal nights whatsoever — the entire cruise operates at resort casual. This makes packing dramatically simpler. Sportswear, casual dresses, skirts, pants, and blouses are appropriate for all evenings. Bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, bathing suits, and torn denim are not allowed in dining rooms, but beyond that the atmosphere is genuinely relaxed and destination-focused.

For women: The easiest cruise to pack for. Printed maxis, kaftans, wrap dresses, and casual resort separates cover every evening beautifully. No need to pack a formal gown or cocktail dress.

Norwegian Cruise Line

MOST RELAXED

Norwegian Cruise Line has no formal nights. The dress code for all evenings is resort casual — the most relaxed code of any major mainstream line. Swimwear must not be worn in the dining room, but beyond that the standards are minimal. On sailings of more than seven nights, there may be at least one ship-wide formal night with cocktail chic attire, but this is rare on Norwegian.

For women: Pack for resort casual throughout. No formal gown needed. A nice sundress or wrap midi for evenings, daytime cover-ups, and your most comfortable daywear covers the entire cruise.

Ultra-Luxury Lines (Seabourn, Silversea, Regent, Azamara)

ELEGANT CASUAL

Ultra-luxury lines have been the surprise story of 2025–2026 dress code evolution: they are becoming more relaxed, not less. Regent Seven Seas now allows clean jeans and sneakers in dining rooms on all evenings. Azamara operates permanently at resort casual. Seabourn and Silversea use 'elegant casual' as their standard — polished but not formal. On longer sailings, there may be one or two formal optional evenings, but ballgowns are not expected.

For women: Quality resort wear — artisanal prints, silk pieces, elegant kaftans — is exactly right for ultra-luxury lines that have moved away from mandatory formality. The focus is on sophistication and quality, not strict codes.

☀️ Daytime on Deck and Port Days

During the day, the deck is genuinely casual across every cruise line — swimwear, shorts, and cover-ups rule the pool area. The single universal rule: you must have a cover-up and footwear whenever you step indoors from the pool deck. Most cruise lines prohibit swimwear in all indoor sit-down restaurants at any time.

✅ Pool and Deck Days

  • Swimwear at pool and sun deck
  • Kaftan, silk kimono, or sheer maxi as cover-up
  • Sundress or linen shorts + top for the casual buffet
  • Comfortable sandals or espadrilles
  • Wide-brim hat and quality sunglasses

⛴️ Port Excursion Days

  • Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
  • A linen maxi or casual midi for town exploring
  • Carry a light cardigan — air-conditioned shops drop 20°F
  • Small crossbody bag for ID, phone, essentials
  • A lightweight scarf for temples and cultural sites requiring coverage

❌ Never Indoors at Any Line

  • Swimwear without a cover-up
  • Bare feet at any venue
  • Baseball caps in most dining rooms
  • Tank tops at sit-down restaurants

🌙 Evening Smart Casual — What to Wear

Smart casual is the standard for most dinner evenings on most cruise lines. It is the code you will use most often, and it is the one worth packing most carefully for. The aim is: polished without being overdressed, comfortable enough for a two-to-three hour dinner, and elegant enough to feel like you have made an effort.

Best Smart Casual Choices for Women

  • Printed maxi dress — the most versatile cruise dinner piece; bold artisanal print photographs beautifully at every venue
  • Wrap midi dress — adjustable fit, universally flattering, can be accessorised differently each night
  • Blouse with tailored trousers or wide-leg pants — especially on cooler itineraries (Alaska, Transatlantic)
  • Silk or chiffon midi in a solid — pairs with statement earrings to read elegant at every tier
  • Dressy jumpsuit — practical, packs flat, works from smart casual through formal night

💡 The Re-Accessorise Trick

On a 7-night cruise you have 7 dinner evenings. You do not need 7 different outfits. A printed wrap dress worn Monday with flat sandals and pearl earrings, worn again Thursday with wedge sandals and statement gold earrings, reads as two completely different outfits to everyone at the table. Pack 3–4 evening dresses and rotate through accessories to create 7+ distinct looks.

“Pack versatile, beautiful pieces that work across multiple occasions — and let accessories do the outfit rotation for you. One perfect printed maxi earns its place over three separate mediocre ones.”

— Sandhya Garg, Project Runway Season 13

✨ Formal Nights and Gala Evenings

The number of formal nights varies significantly by cruise line and cruise length. In 2025–2026, the trend is clear: even luxury lines are relaxing formal expectations. Tuxedos and ballgowns are now genuinely optional on all mainstream lines — the only exception is Cunard, where Gala Evenings are seriously enforced.

How Many Formal Nights?

  • Norwegian / Viking / Virgin: Zero
  • Azamara / Regent: Zero to one
  • Royal Caribbean (7 nights): 1–2 (“Dress Your Best”)
  • Celebrity Cruises: 1–2 (“Evening Chic”)
  • Carnival (6+ nights): 2 (“Elegant Nights”)
  • Cunard: Multiple Gala Evenings
  • Princess (7 nights): 1–2 formal nights

What to Wear (Women)

  • Mainstream lines: Cocktail dress or dressy jumpsuit. You do not need a floor-length gown unless you want one.
  • Celebrity / Holland America: Cocktail dress, skirt-and-blouse, or elegant jumpsuit.
  • Cunard (Gala): Floor-length gown or cocktail dress. Smart trouser suit also acceptable.
  • One outfit is enough: Formal nights are 1–2 nights maximum on most lines.

💡 Formal Night Packing Tip

One statement maxi dress in quality fabric covers formal night on any mainstream line. On Cunard, add one cocktail dress or a floor-length gown. A dressy jumpsuit is equally appropriate on all lines including Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. You never need more than two formal pieces regardless of cruise length.

🎭 Theme Nights and Special Events

Beyond formal nights, many cruise lines schedule theme evenings that add variety and fun to the dress code rotation:

🤸 White Night (MSC, Costa, various)

Everyone wears white. MSC's White Night is a signature event with deck parties, white decorations, and themed cocktails. Pack one white dress or jumpsuit — a white linen or chiffon maxi is perfect and doubles as a daytime piece.

📸 Captain's Dinner / Gala

Most lines schedule a Captain's Dinner as one of the cruise highlights. This is the evening to bring out your most special piece — a floor-length artisanal print, an embroidered gown, a genuine statement outfit. This night is photographed and remembered.

💠 Destination Theme Nights

Many cruises schedule evenings themed to their itinerary — a Mediterranean Night on a Greek islands cruise, a Caribbean Fiesta on a Caribbean sailing. These are where bold, tropical, or culturally-inspired prints shine. Participation is optional but is usually fun.

🌊 Sailaway Deck Party

The first evening departure from port is typically a deck party — casual, celebratory, and perfect for a colourful kaftan or a bold printed sundress. This is where artisanal resort wear earns its moment: you want to look remarkable as the ship pulls out of harbour at sunset.

🧳 The 7-Night Cruise Packing Formula

This formula works across every mainstream cruise line except Cunard (add one formal gown for Cunard):

👗 Evening (7 dinners)

  • ☐ 2–3 printed maxi or midi dresses
  • ☐ 1 cocktail dress or dressy jumpsuit (formal nights)
  • ☐ 1 blouse + smart trousers (alternate look)

Re-accessorise to multiply looks across 7 nights

🥅 Daytime / Deck

  • ☐ 2–3 swimsuits (never rewear wet)
  • ☐ 1–2 kaftans or silk kimonos (cover-up + deck lounging)
  • ☐ 1 linen maxi or casual dress (port days)
  • ☐ 1 lightweight scarf (temple visits, cool evenings)

👠 Shoes (3 pairs)

  • ☐ Flat leather sandals (daytime, port)
  • ☐ Low wedge or block heel (evenings)
  • ☐ Pool slides (deck and pool only)
  • ☐ Foldable flats in clutch for late nights

✨ Accessories

  • ☐ Statement earrings ×4 pairs (vary each night)
  • ☐ Evening clutch ×1
  • ☐ Wide-brim sun hat + sunglasses
  • ☐ Light layer (ship AC is aggressive)

💡 The Fabric Rule for Cruise Packing

Choose pieces in lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics — scuba knit, georgette, silk blends, and quality stretch fabrics. These pack flat, come out of a suitcase looking as good as they went in, and handle the ship's humidity without losing shape. Heavy structured fabrics wrinkle, trap heat on warm-weather itineraries, and take up disproportionate suitcase space. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dress code on a luxury cruise?

Cruise dress codes have three tiers: daytime casual (swimwear, cover-ups, shorts), evening smart casual (the standard most nights — dresses, blouses, trousers), and formal or gala nights (1–3 per cruise depending on the line — cocktail dresses, jumpsuits, floor-length gowns). Swimwear and flip-flops are prohibited in all indoor restaurants at any time on virtually every cruise line. For the full breakdown by cruise line see our guide above.

Do I need a formal dress for a cruise?

It depends on the cruise line. On Cunard, a floor-length gown or cocktail dress for Gala Evenings is expected and enforced. On Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, and Princess, a cocktail dress or dressy jumpsuit is enough — you do not need a ballgown. On Norwegian, Viking, Azamara, and Virgin Voyages, there are no formal nights at all — resort casual covers every evening. In 2025–2026, the clear trend is formal nights becoming more relaxed or disappearing entirely across most mainstream lines.

Can I wear jeans on a cruise?

On most cruise lines, clean dark-wash jeans without tears or distressing are acceptable for casual and smart casual evenings. The exception is Cunard, where jeans are not permitted in the Britannia Restaurant at any time. On formal nights, jeans are not appropriate on any line. Ripped, faded, or distressed denim is not acceptable at any formal dining venue on any cruise line.

What is resort casual on a cruise ship?

Resort casual on a cruise ship means polished but relaxed — dresses, blouses with trousers, printed maxis, or wrap dresses. No swimwear, no athletic wear, no shorts or flip-flops in the dining room. It is the standard evening code for Viking, Norwegian, and Azamara, and the baseline for casual evenings on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. For the complete definition see our What Is Resort Casual Attire guide →

How many outfits do I need for a 7-night cruise?

For a 7-night cruise you need: 2–3 evening dresses (re-accessorised each night to create 5–7 distinct looks), 1 cocktail dress or dressy jumpsuit (for formal nights), 2–3 swimsuits, 1–2 kaftans or cover-ups, 1 linen maxi or casual dress for port days, and a lightweight layer for air conditioning. You do not need a new outfit for every dinner — accessory rotation across 3–4 dresses creates a full week of distinct evening looks.
