An embroidered or jacquard jacket over a black dress turns it into something else entirely, which is why these earn more wear than almost anything else we make. The Klimt Lace Blazer is reduced to $255 from $498. The Agra Gold and Babur Sea Green jacquard jackets are the newest, both open-front with oversized velvet bows. What ikat actually is. The yarns are tie-dyed before weaving, so the pattern is built into the cloth rather than printed on it — which is why the edges look softly feathered rather than sharp, and why no two lengths come out identical. It's slow work, traditional across Central Asia, India and Indonesia, and it's the reason these jackets can't be exactly reproduced.
On tops. The Gulab Tunic in blush at $98 and the printed tops here are cut to work with wide-leg trousers, where the rule is simple: if the trouser is full, the top needs to be fitted or tucked. Several customers buy the tops as sets with matching trousers — see also summer sets.
