Tombstone Arizona

If you are a cowboy lifestyle lover like me, Tombstone in Arizona should be on your travel list. Tombstone is a town in southeastern Arizona, known for its Wild West history. Can you believe, exhibits at the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park include a replica gallows. On historic Allen Street, the O.K. Corral outdoor theater re-enacts an 1881 cowboy gunfight. Resident ghosts are said to haunt the bullet-riddled Bird Cage Theatre. Outlaws are among the local townsfolk buried at the 1878 Boothill Cemetery.

Tombstone Arizona remains one of the most iconic towns of the Wild West. Located in Cochise County, Arizona, Edward Lawrence Schieffelin founded Tombstone in 1879 after discovering silver in the area. Schieffelin and his brother Al made millions of dollars from silver mines in the Cochise Country area. Reportedly, Cochise County silver mines produced $85,000,000 ($2,396,420,879.12 in 2019 after inflation). With so much money being made, it’s no wonder Tombstone Arizona became one of the country’s most historically known towns in American Wild West history.

With such growth, it’s no surprise numerous famous names and events are associated with the name Tombstone. Many movies (Tombstone – 1993), television shows (Tombstone Territory – 1957 to 1960), Western novels (Tombstone by Giles Tippette), and products have been named after or referenced the historical town in some form or fashion (Tombstone Pizza comes to mind). Yes, the classic movie Tombstone, is based on actual town of Tombstone, Arizona.
If you were fascinated by Wyatt Earp, his brothers Morgan and Virgil and Doc Holiday then Tombstone Arizona is the place to see.
Tombstone has a ton of hotels if you want to stay the night and do some amazing ghost tours.

Tombstone AZ is a historical gold mine. Being that Tombstone was such a prosperous silver mining town, it attracted many people to move there looking to strike it big. With tens of millions of dollars worth of silver bullion mined from the immediate area during its hay day, Tombstone quickly became the largest bustling silver mining town in Arizona. In less than seven years, the town’s population exploded from merely 100 to 14,000 people—an astonishing amount of growth in less than a decade for late 1800s.

Why You Should Visit Tombstone, Arizona, in 2020

Tombstone Arizona was highly recommended to us by locals from Tucson. It is mostly known for being a rough, dangerous mining town, which is probably why so many people are so enthralled by its history.
Tombstone is best known as being the location of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral between famed lawmen Virgil Earp, Morgan Earp, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holliday and a group of outlaws called the Cochise County Cowboys.
Many tourists coming to Arizona pay a visit to the O.K. Corral to learn about the actual events that took place there by watching live reenactments.

ONE DAY TRIP TO TUCSON ARIZONA

We did a one day trip to Tombstone starting from the Green Valley -

1. Tombstone was a 1 1/2 hour drive from the Green Valley, driving through the Madera Canyon.

2. After parking at the Historic Allen street we were welcomed in the "Bird Cage Theatre".

3. We walked on the streets and saw a free for all street gunfight enactment, a part of "Vigilante Sunday" event. It was very entertaining to say the least.

4. The shops around are truly one of a kind and we ended up getting our hands on some beautifully crafted leather goods, silver jewelry, cactus candy and handmade T-shirts.

5. After this we did the horse carriage tour of tombstone which was great fun and informative.

6. We went for lunch to the "Big Nose Kates Saloon". It was an amazing experience, we were served by a cowboy and there was amazing live country music.

7. Following our lunch we walked to the Silver mine- The Good Enough Mine underground tours, which was perfect for us as we had a 4 year old. For adventure seekers there are ghost tour options and adventure mine tours too.

8. We ended our trip by creating memories in one of those costume photograph shops by getting sepia toned family photos of us all dressed up. It was very fun, exciting and a great souvenir. Do try it out if you visit Tombstone, Arizona.

The spirits of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the Clanton Brothers live on in the authentic old west town of Tombstone,
home of Boothill Graveyard, the Birdcage Theatre, and the O.K. Corral.
Fan of Western movies? Then there's no doubt you're already familiar with Tombstone and the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

But instead of walking in the footsteps of Kurt Russell on some Hollywood set, walk the wooden boardwalks along the dusty main drag in the real mining town of Tombstone.

After getting its start as a silver mining claim in the late-1870s, the settlement grew along with its Tough Nut Mine, becoming a bustling boomtown of the Wild West. From opera and theater to dance halls and brothels, Tombstone offered much-needed entertainment to the miners after a long shift underground. In 1886, the mines flooded and hit rock bottom, and the miners moved on to the next claim.

But the “Town Too Tough to Die” didn't earn its nickname name for nothing.

Now a tourist hotspot, you can still hang up your cowboy hat and dust off your chaps in the numerous saloons, restaurants, and shops that line Allen Street – each building with its own story to tell. Begin your tour at the old Tombstone Courthouse, now a museum, and be a part of the action with live reenactments of the shootouts that made the town famous held on every corner – the most notable at the iconic O.K. Corral

No cowboys were harmed while photographing, only a tired a husband.
