A Designer's Guide to Desert Dressing

Desert dressing, the designer way: one print, real movement, and a layer for after dark.

Quick Answer

For Coachella 2027 (April 9–11 and 16–18 in Indio, California), wear one bold printed piece in a breathable fabric, a midi or maxi length that moves, flat boots or broken-in sandals, and pack a light jacket for nights that can drop into the 50s. The 2026 crowd traded costume boho for maximalist, personal style — so a statement print beats a flower crown every time.

Coachella asks for three things at once: clothes that survive twelve hours in the desert, clothes that photograph like a headliner, and clothes that still work when the temperature drops thirty degrees after sunset. Most festival guides only solve one of those.

I've designed for heat, travel and the camera for my whole career as a Project Runway designer, in sizes XS through 3XL. This guide covers the 2027 dates and weather, what the fashion press saw at Coachella 2026, twelve designer rules for desert dressing, and twelve pieces from our newest collection, Let Them Eat Cake, that I would actually pack.

The numbers say plan early: the May 2026 advance sale for Coachella 2027 sold out quickly (Stereogum), and industry reports have Tame Impala and Dua Lipa tipped as headliners (Consequence). Your outfit deserves the same lead time.

Coachella 2027 at a Glance

Dates

April 9–11 & 16–18, 2027

Two identical weekends at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, as confirmed when the 2026 festival wrapped (NME).

Lineup

Not official yet

Industry outlet HITS Daily Double reports Tame Impala and Dua Lipa as expected headliners, with Fred again.. in the closing dance slot (Consequence).

Weather

~85°F days, ~57°F nights

Those are April averages for the Coachella Valley (AccuWeather). Evening wind is real: in 2026, gusts cancelled a first-night DJ set (DJ Mag).

Style mood

Maximalist & personal

Less costume, more point of view. One unforgettable piece, practical feet, and accessories stacked with intent. Flower crowns optional.

The fashion press agreed on one thing coming out of the 2026 festival: dressing got more deliberate. Here's what the editors saw, and how I'd translate each trend for 2027.

🌀 Maximalism Is Back

Reported by Vogue Singapore

Vogue Singapore called out a clear resurgence of maximalist looks in the desert — patchwork, layering and stacked jewelry. Translation: a hand-drawn print is your headline act.

🎸 '70s Glamour on Stage

Reported by Harper's Bazaar

Harper’s Bazaar singled out Sabrina Carpenter's '70s-inspired Dior silhouettes. Romantic, flowing and high-glamour belongs in the field, not just on the red carpet.

👢 Flat Boots & Big Belts

Reported by Who What Wear & Trendalytics

Who What Wear spotted fringe boots and thick belts everywhere, and Trendalytics tracked a 633% jump in flat boots among key influencers.

🪶 Boho, Grown Up

Reported by The Zoe Report & GMA

Rachel Zoe told The Zoe Report that fringe still rules daytime, and Good Morning America named crochet the texture of the season, with Western details creeping in.

Underneath it all ran a 2016 nostalgia wave, which British Vogue tied to a longing for a lighter cultural moment (Daily Bruin). And Depop summed up the year as less about costume and more about personal style — exactly where artisanal, limited-edition pieces shine.

12 Designer Rules for Desert Dressing

01

Choose fabrics that breathe

Viscose, linen blends and cotton keep you far cooler at 3pm than polyester or heavy denim. Several of our new pieces are cut in viscose linen satin, which drapes beautifully and doesn't trap heat.

02

Pick a hem that clears the dust

A midi that hits mid-calf, or a maxi you can knot or belt up, stays cleaner than a floor-sweeper on polo-field grass and dirt paths.

03

Secure the neckline for wind

Halters, one-shoulder cuts and wrap ties stay put when evening gusts pick up. Skip slippery spaghetti straps if you plan to dance.

04

Let a sleeve be your sunscreen

A long sleeve or balloon sleeve is free sun protection for the hours you can't find shade. Reapply real sunscreen everywhere else.

05

Pack the night layer early

Average April lows sit in the high 50s. An embroidered jacket or kimono turns your day look into a night look in one move — and it's the piece people ask about.

06

Wear flat boots or broken-in sandals

You'll walk miles a day. The flat-boot trend is a gift: practical, flattering and completely current.

07

Belt it

A thick belt hikes a maxi off the dust, defines the waist and nods to the Western mood that ran through 2026.

08

One statement per outfit

Let the print be the hero. Everything else — bag, shoes, layers — should support it, not compete with it.

09

Stack gold, not plastic

Stacked cuffs and statement earrings photograph beautifully in hard desert light. Browse accessories.

10

Wear a real hat

A wide brim protects your face and finishes the look. Choose straw by day and leave room in your bag.

11

Bike shorts underneath

Under any dress, they solve chafing, wind and sitting on the grass in one step. Nobody sees them; you'll feel the difference.

12

Buy for afterwards

If you can't picture wearing it on vacation, to a wedding or to dinner, skip it. Festival clothes should outlive the festival.

Every print starts as a drawing — then becomes a kaftan you can live in for three days.

Three Days, Three Outfit Formulas

☀️ Friday: Arrive in Colour

Start with your loudest print. A halter or one-shoulder like Louis or Carolina, flat metallic sandals, a straw hat and gold cuffs. Day one is when you have the most energy — and the most photos.

🔥 Saturday: Beat the Heat

Saturday afternoon is the longest and hottest. Go loose with the Duchess kaftan or another piece from our kaftan edit, belted, with flat boots. Tie the Fleur jacket to your bag strap for later.

🌙 Sunday: The Closing-Night Look

Save the showpiece for the last headliner. The Marquis embroidered maxi, a cropped jacket and your best sunglasses. Going to an after-party? You're already dressed.

❄️ After Dark: Every Night

When the sun drops, add the layer. The Fleur or Dauphine jacket over any dress, or the pastel kimono over a tank and shorts. More in one-of-a-kind jackets.

Plus-Size Coachella Outfits

Most of the dresses above are graded to 3XL — not just sized up — so the print scale and neckline stay right on every body. Halters, wraps and kaftans are the easiest festival silhouettes to start with: secure in the wind, easy to move in, and cooler than anything fitted. Frequently Asked Questions

When is Coachella 2027?

Coachella 2027 runs over two weekends at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California: April 9–11 and April 16–18, 2027.

Who is headlining Coachella 2027?

The official lineup has not been released as of October 1, 2026. HITS Daily Double reports that Tame Impala and Dua Lipa are expected to headline, with Fred again.. in the closing dance slot and BTS or SZA in contention for the third headline spot. The 2026 lineup was announced in mid-September 2025, so the 2027 poster is expected soon.

What should I wear to Coachella 2027?

Wear one statement printed piece in a breathable fabric, a midi or maxi length that moves, flat boots or comfortable sandals, a hat and sunglasses, and bring a light jacket for the evening. Maximalist, personal style replaced costume boho as the defining mood of 2026.

How cold does Coachella get at night?

April in the Coachella Valley averages a high around 85°F and a low around 57°F, and evening winds can make it feel colder. Pack a cropped jacket, kimono or wrap for after sunset.

Is boho still in style for Coachella?

Yes, but it has evolved. Fringe, crochet and Western details stayed strong in 2026, while flower crowns and head-to-toe hippie looks faded. The modern version mixes one boho element with a bold print, a tougher boot or a statement belt.

Are dresses practical for Coachella?

Very, if you choose the right ones. Halter, one-shoulder and wrap necklines stay put in the wind, midi hems stay cleaner in the dust, and loose kaftans are cooler than shorts and jeans in the afternoon heat. Wear bike shorts underneath for comfort.

What shoes should I wear to Coachella?

Flat boots, broken-in sandals or sneakers. You will walk several miles a day on grass and dirt, and flat boots were one of the biggest footwear trends of the 2026 festival.
